The Union Pines boys’ junior varsity basketball team topped North Moore by a tally of 62-42 Tuesday at Bob Ward Gymnasium in Cameron.

Vike sophomore swingman Robert Collins scored 16 to lead 3-A Union Pines to the cross-county nonconference win against 1-A North Moore.

With the victory the Vikes improved to 2-1 on the season.

Collins had an eight-point performance in a tightly contested first quarter that ended with Union Pines clinging to an 11-10 lead. Then a 20-point offensive outburst in the second period put Union Pines in front 31-18 at the break.

By intermission Collins had scored 11 points and tallied three steals for the Vikes. Fellow sophomore teammate and wing player Joseph Gisler had nine points and three assists by halftime to help the Union Pines cause.

North Moore got six points and five boards in the first half from freshman forward Jordan Maness to help the Mustangs keep pace.

In the third period Union Pines got two buckets apiece from Collins, Joseph Bibey and Ivan Gonzalez. Overall, the Vikes put 17 points on the board to take a commanding 48-29 edge into the fourth quarter.

Collin’s 16 points led all scorers in the game. He also tallied five steals and four rebounds along with two assists. Gisler finished with nine points, five assists, four rebounds and a steal in a strong all-around outing, while the 6-foot-4 sophomore forward Bibey finished with seven points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Maness led the Mustangs in scoring with 13 points, followed by sophomore Josh Wallace’s eight. North Moore had two players finish with double-digit rebound totals. Sophomore Kirby Lambert had 11 rebounds along with six points, while Wallace collected 10 boards to notch a double-double. North Moore moved to 1-1 with the loss.
