Lady Vike freshman forward Nia Mosley scored 13 points Tuesday in Cameron to lead Union Pines to a 37-12 victory against North Moore in a girls’ junior varsity basketball cross-county contest at Bob Ward Gymnasium.
With the nonconference win the Vikings squad, which went 18-2 last season and tied for the Cape Fear Valley Conference title, improved to 1-1 this season.
On the night, Mosley collected an impressive double-double with 11 rebounds on top of seven blocked shots.
“Our girls played decent defense in the first half but we missed some easy shots,” said Viking head coach David Pope. “Those are baskets we need to make in tighter games.
“Mia (Mosely) had a strong performance. When she puts her mind to it she can be a real beast out there. When she goes after those rebounds she is going to get them. She is strong with the ball and has great hands.”
Other scoring leaders for the Vikings included sophomore forward McKayla Kraft with six points, sophomore guard Onika Williams with five, and freshman wing Jamaria McPhatter, also with five.
Kraft tallied two blocks and seven boards in the tilt. Williams, who went down late in the first half with an ankle sprain that kept her out of the final two quarters of action, had a solid first half. In the opening two periods the sophomore point guard snatched six steals, scored five points and secured four rebounds and a block. McPhatter added four rebounds and three steals to the stat sheet.
North Moore, which was paced by four points from Carla Brown and three points from Erica Vasquez, had its record drop to 0-2 with the loss.
Leading the Mustangs on the boards for were the freshmen pair of Paige Garner with seven and Alyssa Pickle with six.
