Simplistically, the federal deficit arises because government expenses far exceed revenues.
As we approach the “fiscal cliff,” Republican leaders are sending clear signals that they are willing to compromise on certain tax increases demanded by the Obama administration. That’s a good thing; taxpayers (myself included) may not like it, but it is necessary to bolster the income side of the equation.
On the other hand, unless I’m missing something, I’ve read and heard precious few specifics on the Democrats’ willingness to reduce expenses — most notably the “sacred cow” entitlement programs. Are we being set up, with support of the liberal media, for more of the blame game directed at the millionaires and billionaires if we fall off the cliff?
Don’t bet against it.

To be fair, the deficit arises when expenses exceed revenues: it takes two. Please remember that this country was running major surpluses prior to the Bush tax cuts:, these cuts along with the war and President Bush's expansion of Medicade to include perscription drugs quickly led to major deficits. President Obama has laid out his revenue plan and has asked the Republicans to lay out their proposals for reduced spending. What exactly, have the Republicans said they specifically want to cut? All I hear are calls for President Obama to lay out his programs for cuts?

Again with the Bush bashing. The Bush era was going fine until the last two years which was an overwhelming democratic congress with a spending fixation.And a Barney Frank and company screwing up the Fanny and Freddy mortgage debacle. The FFM crash was the tipping point in the financial crash that ensued. Neither democrat nor republican really saw the spark in the leaf pile. Now as to the fix. There is unimaginable waste in the federal governmental operation. There is waste in military operations, not in military manpower or equipment. The entitlement programs need serious overhaul, especially welfare and food stamps. [now remember Social Security is NOT an entitlement, it is user paid for] But the waste and fraud in medicare and medicade is seriously high. Unemployment must be capped and reduced if America can regain a workforce. Foreign largess MUST be rethought and where nations are against us CUT IT totally. You cannot buy friends, so why try. Obama has asked for a new debt ceiling. THIS HAS TO STOP!! NO NEW borrowing, As for taxes. Obama is creating a serious schism between haves and havenots. He has declared class warfare. But we have what we have. My kids and grandchildren will have to deal with it. Some legacy, eh?

Thatcher- I would draw your attention to this FactCheck.org article: link text It shows a narrowing deficit in the early years turning into major annual budget surplus in the latter years. Note, in contrast, the move to major budget deficits following the Bush tax cuts. Not to put too fine a point on it, but I had looked it up before writing the post.

I would agree with you that Clinton's last few budgets (given the new Republican majority in the House) had smaller deficits and a projected surplus for the last two years of his second term. The debt, however, was never reduced, and in fact grew larger under Clinton. Cheers!

I am beginning to wonder at the level of civility espoused here. SPUWS; Please review basic economics. YOU CANNOT SPEND MORE THAN YOU HAVE TO SPEND without going into debt. Obama has blown any sense of fiscal responsibility out of the converation. This is NOT Bush, this is Obama. And he wants MORE. THIS is the most irresponsible POTUS America has had including James Buchannon. But the entitlement crowd has won the day, and America will be the poorer for it. SPUWs I'm assuming you live on a budget unless of course you get free welfare money from the govt. Even the you still must curtail spending to fit your budget. Problem is Obama and his fellow liberals Reidd and Pelosi DO NOT want to cut spending. Just for the hell of it I will do yalls homework for you since much like preteens you wont do it for yourselves.
Year 1 Clinton 1992 national debt. $4,177,009,000,000
Year 8 Clinton 2000 national debt. $5,662,216,013,697
Ok now lets expel some mis notions. First, Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich DID create 3 1/2 years of annual budget surpluses. However only the last year of the clinton administration did the National Debt decrease by 2% or roughly 110 billion dollars. If that rate had remained static it would have taken roughly 49.7 years to pay off the national debt. Again thats if no expenses ever rose and income to the government stayed the same. Ie Static.
In 2002 there was a recession caused by the collapse of the Dot Com industry. This increased the National Debt under President bush due to a reduction in the revenue paid to the federal governemnt. in 2007 or 1 year before Obama, GWB had reduced federal spending as was returning to a pattern where budget surpluses would have been achievable again.
National debt increased under Obama in the first 3 years of his first time by a rate of almost 15% ballooning the national debt to a point where for the first time ever National Debt exceeded GPD.
There is your homework. Refute me I dare you to try.

LMAO, The main "saving grace" is that it won't be that long before all of these things come to pass. I promise, l will not be one that says "l told you so" when it all goes down, but it will be ugly. I absolutely do not agree with the Repubs "talking points" but some of them are spot on. Think about our country as being a big household. You CANNOT run your household like we are running the country. You would have the process servers lined up at your door serving you papers over your non-payment of debts. Do you disagree with this? Why should we run our nation any differently? I honestly do not believe one can spend their way into prosperity.

Thatcher, I am happy ya'll are having such fine Dec weather!! And it's not even raining like it can this time of the year. Here, we are once again happy. They were forecasting 50 below for three nights, now they have backed down to only 40. There is a difference, stuff still kinda works at 40. We are down to 4 and a half hours of low sunlight now, but in three weeks everyone will start gaining again!! Spring will come someday. Take care, my friend, and have a great weekend!!

Come on here, cut the racism crap. The topic is whether or not the republican congres is eing set up. Of course! Obama has no idea what budgets are, and why he needs one. That is the Keyensian way. Obama WANTS to level the playing field. It is, in his mind, unfair that some people become far more sucessful that others. He wants to take the millions of the millionaires and distribute it to the non-money makers. Now this being said, we are approaching a supposed fiscal cliff, in the political minds. Is there such an animal? not really. There is a spending problem, a debt problem, a serious problem of foreign entities owning our debt, and many of these same entities are now moving in and buying our properties. Obama has deliberately taken an evasive approach, chosing to meet with his voter base instead of facing congress. He has Not submitted a serious budget, has set one requirement of solely setting the debt ceiling, is looking for unlimited money access for stimulus, and has has NO plan for cutting the debt. BUT he will use his sales approach to vilify the republican at every turn.

You are correct that white people receive more in welfare then black people. But why is this? well lets ponder this a minute, something you cant do so again ill do it for you.
Population of white people in America 78.1%
Population of black people in America 13.1%

So yea one can understand that if 78% of the country is white then they will receive the bulk of the money, however lets look at it per capita.

Black Population 38%

Our volunteer had to tell her that the soda limit was drinks larger than 16 ounces and was just in New York City. Obama had exactly nothing to do with that.

upperwestside, according to the oath of office, he is already in "default" of the Constitutional clause. In so many ways he has not upheld the Constitution of the United States. I do not expect him to do this at all in his second term. I also believe America will fall under his watch. As l live here in this frozen land, doing what needs to be done to live and live well, I feel sadness for the American people. Friends and family that l have known over so many years. And to know that NEITHER of the parties are ready or willing to accept freedom like our forefathers dreamed for us. That is very sad. It is also a bit sad that l gave probably the best ten years in my life to defend her.

Now as the topic title suggests [ you remember the topic, don't you] Obama, through T.Geithner financial wonderboy, are challenging the republican congress, John Boehner in particular, to do their job for them. What you don't seem to understand is the PRESIDENT it required to submit a budget every year for the congress, [House AND Senate] to review, and vote on. This president has NEVER submitted a budget, BUt he does go on spending sprees, throwing stimulus monies at various pet projects of those who support him. ie; the EPA and this greenhouse idiocy and solar and other nonviable energy programs, with no positive end result. . Now SPUWS, I trust you do realize you cannot spend money you don't have, --are we in agreementon this?, you do not borrow money you have no hope of repaying, ---are we in agreement on this??? Obama has NO plan except to spend and place this nation infurther financial debt, and as Geithner desires to do print more paper bills and call it money thereby increasing inflation and thereby increasing costs to the point nobody can afford anything but government largess. TRhis is Keyensian economics. Yes Obama has set a trap and sadly Boehner , I doubt is smart nor strong enough to stay away from.

I see the Republican Party shrinking into a southern regional party within the next couple of decades. It is rapidly becoming irrelevant in today's political world. It will not be missed.

TAP - I'm not the one who defined 'landslide.' It was Fox Noise which on several occasions predicted that Romney (remember him? Me neither) would win more than 300 electoral votes, making it a landslide.
Or maybe that only applies to white candidates.
