Pinecrest Boys Suffer Tough Loss to Bucs

A moment after Jack Britt basketball coach Isaiah Walker completed the postgame mingling with the coaches and players from Pinecrest, he summed up Tuesday’s evening’s turnover and foul-fest in a few words.

“That was ugly,” he said of the Buccaneer boys’ 54-42 victory over the Patriots at James Moore Gym.

The two teams combined to commit over 50 fouls and 50 turnovers. Together they also made less than half of the free throws taken in the game. The Patriots dropped to 1-1, while it was the season opener for the squad from Fayetteville.

Playing on consecutive nights, the Patriots showed the same kind of intensity on defense that contributed to Monday’s 67-54 win over Southern Lee. This one was tied at 23-23 after Kardashian Ragin inbounded the ball to Brendan Ortiz for a basket about two minutes into the third period.

But a three by Mike Broadhurst sparked a 12-1 run, giving the Bucs a 35-24 lead. The visitors kept the door open by committing their own share of turnovers and missing 17 free throws in the half.

The Patriots were unable to take advantage. The closest they came after that was eight points at 47-39 when Ragin split a pair of free throws with two minutes left.

Justin Ray with 11 points and Ortiz with 10 were the leading scorers for the Patriots. K.J. McGrew led the Bucs with 19. The Patriots committed 29 turnovers and committed 30 fouls. They were just 8-for-21 from the charity stripe.

Their 36 percent shooting from the field might have been almost good enough had it not been for all the times they didn’t get a shot off because of the turnovers.

“We have to understand how to focus ourselves in tough situations and to play in tough situations,” Patriot coach Andrew Lacey said. “We missed a ton of layups, we had some silly fouls and we didn’t take care of the basketball.

“Those are mental mistakes and all of them correctable. They gave us the opportunities, but we didn’t capitalize.”

The Patriot junior varsity team improved to 2-0 with a 59-48 victory at Jack Britt. They were led in the scoring department by Stephon Stephens with 14 points and Logan Crisp with 12.
