Hickory Open: More Than 100 Play in Tournament

A field of 104 competitors from 18 states, as well at Toronto, Ontario and Scotland, teed off Saturday, Nov. 3, in the ninth annual Mid Pines Hickory Open Championship at Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club in Southern Pines.
The tournament has become one of the most popular events, with players using clubs primarily from the 1920s while dressed in plus fours and ties.
The event is played over the first weekend in November on the Donald Ross-designed layout.
Rick Woeckener from Fredricksburg, Va., won the gold medal in the Donald Ross division (gross division) with a score of 78-72-—150.
Tony Smarrelli of Pinehurst finished second and won the silver medal with a score of 79-75—154, and Ben Hollerbach from Chamblee, Ga., finished in third place, winning the bronze with a score of 82-76—158.
Ted Kopec from Niceville, Fla., won the gold medal in the Julius Boros division (net division) with a score of 70-68—138.
Mike Heller of Madison, Wis., finished second and won the silver medal with a score of 66-76—142 and Marty Joy of Charlevoix, Mich., finished in third place winning the bronze medal with a score of 72-71—143.
Ken Holtz form Sun City West, Ariz., won the gold medal in the Skip Alexander division (gross senior) with a score of 77-77—154.
Rusty Wells of Pinehurst finished second and won the silver medal with a score of 78-71—159.
Glen Davis from Pinehurst finished third and won the bronze medal with a score of 80-80—160.
Ron Dunn from Guelph, Ontario, won the gold medal in the Old Tom Morris division (senior net) with a score of 65-70—135.
Max Hollon of Evansville, Ind., finished second and won the silver medal with a score of 72-64—136 in a scorecard playoff over James Clawson of Charlottesville, Va. Clauson finished third and won the bronze medal with a score of 65-71—136.
Tom and Tommy Miller won the gold medal in the Bobby Jones gross division with a score of 155. Dick and Mike Heller won the gold medal in the Bobby Jones net division with a score of 128.
The Bobby Jones division is a father/son team better ball competition played over the two rounds.
Barbara Kopec from Niceville, Fla., won the gold medal in the Peggy Kirk Bell ladies division with a score of 101-85—186.
Pine Needles hosted a foursomes competition on Friday, Nov. 2, 2 for the Mid Pines Hickory Open weekend.
There were 16 teams competing using a true alternate stroke format.
Rich Grula and Brian Schuman finished first in the gross division of the foursomes competition and Kevin Cawley and Randy Jensen came in second place.
Chris Deinlein and Hampton Munsey finished first in the net division and Marty Joy and Chuck McMillan finished in second place.
The 10th annual Mid Pines Hickory Open will be played on Nov. 8-10, 2013.
