Southern Middle Harriers Sweep County Meet

The Southern Pines Middle School boys’ and girls’ teams repeated as champions at the Moore County Middle School Cross Country Championships held at the Elks Club on Thursday.

Isabel Flores, a seventh-grader at Pope John Paul II, won the girls’ race for the second year in a row. Southern Middle seventh-grader, Xzavier Barrett, was the boys’ winner by less than a second over sixth-grader Ben Verchick of Pope John Paul II. Sixty-three boys and 60 girls competed in the two-mile races.

The team scores based on the first five runners to finish for each school were: boys — Southern Middle 34, New Century 66, West Pine 86 and Sandhills Classical Christian 133; girls — Southern Middle 39, West Pine 46, Pope John Paul II 67 and New Century 74.
