A Call to Overturn 'Citizens United'

The 2012 election was by far the most expensive in U.S. history.
Now that the campaign season is over, we can finally get a break from all those ads. Most people know those ads and the huge sums of money that paid for them were unleashed by the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. Nearly $1 billion is estimated to have been spent by outside groups alone.
That amount is a direct result of Citizens United. Nearly 80 percent of Americans, including 68 percent of Republicans, 82 percent of independents and 87 percent of Democrats, want a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United.
Eleven states have formally called for an amendment, including Montana and Colorado, where the voters statewide voted on Tuesday to call for one.
Let’s add North Carolina to that list.

Yes, Jonathan, thank you! Too many votes in this country are being bought. "Citizens United" should read "Rich People Who Want to Manipulate the Government to Their Advantage". What about the citizens who can't afford to buy the next election? Who is speaking for us?

Every citizen, rich and poor alike, should all have the same voice.

When foreign countries and individuals are allowed to contribute to our election system there is going to be a problem.. This was a no brainer...Really shows the Supreme Court negative effect on our society..
DaveyNC 6 months, 1 week ago
So the Supreme Court is a net negative institution? Lol

John Roberts cleared Oblaimacare just to make a point. That was not positive. 50% of America did not listened to his point, and we are stuck! If one conservative dies or retires in the next 4 years, this country will never recover! The radical left does not like the constitution, and they will take it down! Piece by peace!

I guess it all depends on what your definition of crazy is... (if you were referring to me) The regulations that are being piled on our backs without Congress even seeing them, as well as other laws going into effect without Congress, Dream Act, Obamacare waivers, EPA action, land taken off the drill list. Do these things make you feel warm and fuzzy?? Do you think his first 2 supremes are radical picks? One overturned on 60% of all her rulings in appeal, and the other one never a judge at all... That's crazy to me. Now the appointed liar and UN gun control rep, Susan Rice is picked to be Sec. o State, with John "Jane Fonda" Kerry mentioned as Sec o Defense! More crazy! Not a theory, just more poor judgement! An endless supply!

Keep diggin' middleman, pretty soon you'll graduate from "crazy" to "sociopathic," then we can inter you at one of the more, er, "remote" reeducation centers. I hear central Alaska is really cool in Winter.

So Jimt What in that last post in not true. And I need proof not just your flapping. It's sad that facts get thrown away in this process because they are not Politically Correct. Please explain the crazy part?? This baseless name calling from you progressives has got to stop. Do a little homework before you spew! You consider it a mandate to raise taxes on the rich because the poor people voted for it. Really?? You and Heim must chat alot!
jimt 6 months, 1 week ago
So what in your esteemed consideration would constitute a mandate to raise taxes on the rich? Elections have consequences. The President and Democratic candidates for the Senate and House ran on that policy. They won. A. It wasn't only poor people who voted for them. B. And who cares if it was "poor people." Are you suggesting that only those who have taxes who would have their taxes increased are allowed to vote on the issue?
I probably know more about the history and public policy twists and turns of the this Country than you (B.A. Political Science, M.A. Government, worked as a congressional staffer).
You are certainly allowed to vent, but if you are suggesting that the Obama Administration has done things in the area of regulations, drilling rights, actions by the EPA, that are illegal, you are wrong. If you disagree with said same, fine. If you find them "crazy," also fine. As I said before, elections have consequences. Your side lost, twice. Buck up! Or better yet, do as your side has told people on my side for the last 40 years, "America, Love It or Leave It." So leave.

http://www.factcheck.org/2009/05/sotomayor-overturned/
"Q: What percentage of Sonia Sotomayor’s opinions have been overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court?
A: Of the majority opinions that Judge Sonia Sotomayor has authored since becoming an appellate judge in 1998, three of them have been overturned by the Supreme Court.
FULL ANSWER:
Our search for appellate opinions by Sotomayor on the LexisNexis database returned 232 cases. That’s a reversal rate of 1.3 percent.
But only five of her decisions have been reviewed by the justices. Using five as a denominator, the rate comes out to 60 percent."
In other words, although she authored 232 opinions in total during her years as a judge, only 5 reversed by the Supreme Court. Of those five, she was reversed on three, ergo your 60% figure.
