Coach Evan Saleeby’s Pinecrest boys’ soccer team didn’t find the route easy, but a shootout victory over Terry Sanford in a second-round state 4-A playoff game at the John Williams Field on Saturday night has extended its season to the Elite 8.

They will host Wilmington Laney next week.

The game ended in a 2-2 tie, and Pinecrest survived overtime playing two men down, after losing two players to red-card situations. They advanced on the strength of winning the shootout 4-3.

The Patriots worked hard all night, with goals by Taylor Morton (free kick) and Clay Richter accounting for the Pinecrest scores in regulation.

Junior goal keeper Garrett Melia led the Patriot efforts in overtime and in the penalty shootout.
