Come Back to Our 'Can Do' Attitude

I am concerned that we are becoming a country of government control, a people of growing dependency on government. In short, a socialist country.
In a YouTube video, Hungarian immigrant Thomas Peterffy says, “I grew up in a socialist country and I have seen what that does to people. There is no hope, no freedom, no pride in achievement. The nation became poorer and poorer, and that’s what I see happening here.
“America’s wealth comes from the efforts of people striving for success. Take away their incentive with bad-mouthing success and you take away the wealth that helps us take care of the needy. Yes, in socialism the rich will be poorer. But the poor will also be poorer.”
Peterffy became a very successful businessman, with a seat on the American Stock Exchange. Please watch and consider the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnX7TNFIELg. Voters who want to help the poor, please consider this.
The “can do” attitude of Americans resulted in our becoming the strongest, most economically successful country in the world. We are losing our position in the world because we fail to encourage self-sufficiency.
Let’s encourage people everywhere to rely more on themselves more, and less on government.

Hungary was not socialist; it was Communist. There's a difference.
Denmark, Norway, Germany, France, and most of Western Europe could be described as socialist. They seem to muddle along.
Individual achievement is a good thing. But it's a lot easier to succeed in a country with a robust public (socialist) infrastructure. If you know of a successful industrial democracy without any public (socialist) services (roads, water systems, sewers, armies, schools, courts, postal systems, etc) please let me know.

Jim-
They do more than muddle along. People there routinely register a higher level of satisfaction and have longer life expediencies than their American counterparts. They tend to believe that there is a role for government and are willing to pay taxes to finance this role.

pg, you caught me. I was (as I often do) understating the obvious.
All of the countries I mentioned have dramatically lower health care costs and better outcomes than we do. Too, their high-speed Internet is much faster than ours at a fraction of the cost. And cell phone costs are lower while the data transfers are blindingly fast. Way cool. We should be so lucky.
Rail travel in much of Europe is economical and convenient.
I'm still waiting for the flood of Western European refugees. I guess it will be a while.

Their cell phone costs are lower? Count me in!! I want to be a socialist, or communist, or whatever lowers my cell phone bill. Thanks for this crucial information! Cheers! "Way too cool."

JimHeim-- "I was (as I often do) understating the obvious." Seems to me you are always overstating the ridiculous. Socialism or Communism: "Way too cool." Cheers!

Jim you never understate anything, infact you never state anything at all, you simply mumble. PG I have already just now proved you uninformed, please dont make me do it again.

Mr. Heim, might I suggest that if everything was so great as you seem to think, why aren't people flocking there in droves, instead of coming to America? How much illegal immigration do you think is going on in places like Denmark and Norway?
"But it's a lot easier to succeed in a country with a robust public (socialist) infrastructure."
Hate to tell you this, "public infrastructure" and "socialist infrastructure" are not the same things. Where are your statistics to support such an affirmation?

FightFire - Europe has a constant influx of illegal immigrants attempting to get in from North Africa, Eastern Europe, and Asia. Illegal Chinese immigrants will sometimes lock themselves in a 40' container for 2 months to attempt to get in (twice as long as it takes to get to the US)

Pack, I think Mao's total dead figure is low, although in his case most of the dead were the result of insane economic policies (Great Leap Forward), or deliberate internal civil war (Cultural Revolution) - Jung Chang puts the number around 80 million, although that represents the highest figure I've seen.

The differnce between Socialism and Communism ...........

Toda 6 months, 3 weeks ago
One can't help but wonder how long Dee TEA PARTY Parks believes our nation is headed toward socialism? Did her revelation begin on POTUS'O's watch, or on one of the Bush's watches? All of a sudden our nation is experiencing socialism. Perhaps TEA Dee should read Karl Marx before jumping to another lame brain conclusion.
JimHeim 6 months, 3 weeks ago
packwilleat - You have listed former Communist countries. Do conservatives go to school anymore? Have you no clue about the various types of government, or do they fall into one of two bins - republic and socialist?
Learn the difference between communism and socialism. It will help you understand how th world works.
I doubt that the citizens of the Scandinavian countries are unhappy with their socialist programs. I see no influx of Danish refugees.

Pack, Mao remains a highly studied and fascinating character, and is still highly quotable as he was a prolific writer. His guerrilla tactics are still used by some rebel organizations (Shining Path, Nepal UCP). As a leader of a revolution (pre-1949), he was a far more impressive figure than as leader of the new China, where from the mid-1950's or so he became a psychopathic, paranoid tyrant who led his country down a disastrous road of collectivization and endless class struggle.

It's about time the lefties came out of the closet and told the world what they really advocate......... SOCIALISM!!! Well done guys!! Just like your beloved leader, a disastrous history of failure...... and you still deny every bit of it. Captialism > Fascism > Socialism > Communism. That's the natural progression. We've been a Fascist nation for quite some time. JimHeil ~ your selective history and biased thought processes are really starting to shine. But I have a good idea for ya....... me and some of the Americans on this site will pitch some money together and buy a one way ticket for you, DR, Toda, CB, MC7, and who ever else you have, and send you to your favorite socialist destination spot. How does that sound????
packwilleat 6 months, 3 weeks ago
Socialism, just like your beloved workers unions, is nothing more but slavery in disguise. I could paint it out for you, but it would be like talking to a wall.

Hey Pack, I see that most of Americans want to be European socialist. I guess that is OK, but it is a shame that our country has come to this end. That invitation is still there, and when it all goes to hell in a hand basket, we are going to be OK. We will actually probably thrive, not just survive. It is going to sure be a nasty summer/fall next year. Especially with the horrible tragedy that has happened in the northeast.. That disaster is on-going and going to get much worse. And then add the election results come next week....not a pretty picture.
packwilleat 6 months, 3 weeks ago
Hey John~ it is a tragedy for sure. My family fought for their lives to escape the Nazi invasion of Poland. My great uncle was counter intelligence to the KGB. I'm only third generation to such horror. I know many others with the same background. But to see our nation adamantly steering towards socialism, is heart breaking. Everything our country and people fought against to be free is now a main stream ideology. Thanks for the invite, I may take you up on it. The wife on the other hand, needs some coaxing.
Thatcher 6 months, 3 weeks ago
Hey packwilleat-- Sounds like our Alaska trips are on parallel courses. My wife hates the cold, too. Maybe we could send the beautiful wives to St. Barts, and you and me could go to Alaska and throw back a few with Yukon...after hunting and fishing. Having never been there, I really would like to learn their fishing techniques for their waters. Cheers!
Yukonjohn 6 months, 3 weeks ago
Thatcher, that sounds great!!! I would love to have both of you come up at the same time. I have a 5th wheel so we would have plenty of room. And as far as fishing, we do it just like ya'll do, a stick of powder and a blasting cap!! LOL, just joking, my buddy up in Central says the fishing we were doing up on the Porcupine River was so good, it ruins you for any other fishing. It is the last week of July. It really is unbelievable. If you make two cast with no fish, you pull anchor, drift back about 100 ft. and every cast you are pulling in a big one!!!

I really enjoyed watching the tea baggers come to the polls in Carthage during early voting. They were easy to spot what with the sour looks on their faces. For a while I couldn't be sure if it was anger and frustration brought on by watching Fox Noise or chronic constipation. Kinda hard to tell the difference sometimes.

JimHeil~ where dem crazy tea baggers!?!? Let's get 'em and give 'em the ol' what for!! Where the tea baggers falter, is their belief that if the right person is elected... every thing will be fixed and hunky dorry. Call me a pessimist if you will, but me and some others are not that naive.
Aberdeeniac 6 months, 3 weeks ago
Jim it's anger budy.... These guys and gals are upset that we have a president that has no business sense..... I think it's time for this again..... Let's put tax cuts in terms everyone can understand. Suppose that every day, ten men go out for dinner. The bill for all ten comes to $100If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this: The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing. The fifth would pay $1. The sixth would pay $3. The seventh $7. The eighth $12. The ninth $18. The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59. So, that's what they decided to do. The ten men ate dinner in the restaurant every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement -- until one day, when the owner threw them a curve. "Since you are all such good customers," he said, "I'm going to reduce the cost of your daily meal by $20." So, now dinner for the ten only cost $80. The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes. So, the first four men were unaffected. They would still eat for free. But what about the other six, the paying customers? How could they divvy up the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his 'fair share'? The six men realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody's share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being 'PAID' to eat their meal. So, the restaurant owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man's bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay. And so: The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings). The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33% savings). The seventh now paid $5 instead of $7 (28% savings). The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings). The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings). The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings). Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to eat for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings. "I only got a dollar out of the $20," declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man "but he got $10!""Yeah, that's right," exclaimed the fifth man. "I only saved a dollar, too. It's unfair that he got ten times more than me!""That's true!!" shouted the seventh man. "Why should he get $10 back when I got only $2? The wealthy get all the breaks!""Wait a minute," yelled the first four men in unison. "We didn't get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!" The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.The next night the tenth man didn't show up for dinner, so the nine sat down and ate without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn't have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

Aberdeeniac - Maybe you can explain why Obama has the best record of all presidents for corporate profits since 1900 .
Toda 6 months, 3 weeks ago
Not using Romney's tax burden on dividends: "The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59."
Aberdeeniac 6 months, 3 weeks ago
Jim you would have to take in account the value of the dollar.... Next do you have link that ALL US CORPORATIONS have the highest profits since 1900???? If not then why are the few sitting on their money? I think you know the answer to that..... TODA.... Capital gains ??? nice twist but not mentioned above!!!! And if it were how many times would you tax the same dollar????
Toda 6 months, 2 weeks ago
Aberdeeniac => Your extemporaneous attempt to explain a $100.00 dinner bill did mention Capital gains: to wit ~ "The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
That money or dividend has not been taxed before, because it is not earned income but tax on money received from investments. How then are investments taxed to begin with? They aren't!
I'm most certain that you can explain how investments are taxed when rolled over to another investment portfolio ...? Or the original investment was taxed: And if it were how many times would you tax the same dollar????
JimHeim 6 months, 2 weeks ago
Aberdeeniac, those weren't from my numbers. That was a recent analysis by Motley Fool. I guess they've gone socialist on us.

I see that three socialist European hellholes (Denmark, Norway and Sweden) top the list of the most prosperous countries in the world. We sure wouldn't want a distinction like that here. USA! USA! USA!
