Susan J. Pockmire of Southern Pines and Albert S. Tufts of Pinehurst were among six North Carolina shooters inducted into the 2011/2012 North Carolina Skeet Shooting Hall of Fame.

A ceremony was held during the North Carolina State Skeet Championships. Accepting the award posthumously for Tufts was his son, Leonard Tufts of Pinehurst.

Albert Tufts was recognized for being a driving force in North Carolina skeet shooting. His family built a skeet facility at the Pinehurst Gun Club in the mid-1930s. After World War II, Albert Tufts was among a core group who started the North Carolina Skeet Shooting Association.

He served as the association’s secretary-treasurer for many years. His work as manager of the Pinehurst Gun Club helped establish it as one of the premier clubs in the country.

Pockmire is the first woman to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Recognition for her contribution to the sport and past shooting accomplishments include two world titles and more than 80 gun championships. She is a former member of Field and Stream’s All-American Skeet Team, the North Carolina State Skeet Team and Southern Zone Skeet Team. She also served as secretary-treasurer of both the state and Southern Zone organizations.

After winning the ladies .410 World Championships, Pockmire took a hiatus from her career in marketing to manage the Pinehurst Gun Club.

“It was a wonderful job and extremely rewarding. However, I eventually returned to my career, and that pretty much put an end to my shooting.”

Pockmire was asked what makes a good shooter.

“Like any sport, or just life in general, surround yourself with people who are better than you,” she said. “Then it only makes you a better person.”

The North Carolina Skeet Hall of Fame was established in 2009. The criteria under which the inductees are considered are shooting achievements and sustaining contributions to the sport.
