The Sunrise Theater continues its May lineup with a romantic comedy that one critic called "indelibly funny and touching, but with a real sting in its tail."
"Friends with Kids" is an ensemble comedy in which two Manhattan friends without kids decide to have a child together while continuing to date other people.
It stars Adam Scott, Jennifer Westfeldt (who also wrote and directed the film), Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Megan Fox, Chris O'Dowd and Maya Rudolph. It will be shown on Thursday, May 24, through Monday, May 28, at 7:30 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday, at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m.
This movie is rated R and runs for 1 hour and 40 minutes.
The film's official website provides the following summary: "Friends with Kids" is a daring and poignant ensemble comedy about a close-knit circle of friends at that moment in life when children arrive and -everything changes.
The last two singles in the group observe the effect that kids have had on their friends' relationships and wonder if there's a better way. They decide to have a kid together - and date other people. There are big laughs and unexpected emotional truths as this unconventional experiment leads everyone in the group to question the nature of friendship, family and, finally, true love.
This film's cast consists of four members from the cast of the hit comedy "Bridesmaids": Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Mara Reinstein.
David Edelstein of New York Magazine writes, "It has a nervous, high-strung rhythm and terrific -tension, as if the characters' backs are against the wall and the clock is ticking down ... a marvelous film."
Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly concludes that "the observations about parenthood, pro and con, are quick and smart, and Adam Scott effortlessly steals the show, softening Jennifer Westfeldt's brittle cuteness."
The historical Sunrise Theater is located at 250 NW Broad St. in Southern Pines.
Tickets for the all shows are $7 for adults and are only available at the box office before each show.
Refreshments, including beer and wine, are available.
