Why the Ban?

As yet another example of how the Obama administration is quietly attempting to disarm American citizens in violation of the Second Amendment, while arming America’s enemies, “fast and furious” with a stroke of a pen, no congressional consultation, no media attention, they have recently banned the re-importation of nearly 1 million American-made M1 Garand and M1 Carbine rifles from Korea.
These rifles are clearly among the most historic American military weapons carried by thousands of our citizens in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Made in America, by Americans, to defend American interests abroad, for decades these rifles have been favorites among law-abiding American target shooters, hunters and collectors.
Why the ban? According to the Department of State, because they “might fall into the wrong hands.” “Fast and furious” again.
When one considers the disapproval of the job-creating, energy dependence-reducing, shovel-ready Keystone Pipeline, the ridiculous start of negotiations with Iran while defending Iran in court against the American hostages, and now the massive reduction in U.S. military might, is there anybody in the Obama administration that got the memo that they work for us? Or, was such a memo ever sent?
As a retired military officer, I remember my oath of office “to defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic.” I now wonder exactly what or who is really a “domestic enemy?”

I was with you until the 4th paragraph. What does the Keystone Pipeline and Iran negotiations have to do with gun bans? So we can not buy certain types of guns, but we can still buy other guns that are at least semi-auto.
And as a question are most collectible (antique) guns plugged or have the firing mechanism removed anyway?

Jd...The only reason for banning either of these rifles is that the Democrat Party has a long history of not liking firearms in the hands of the citizens. If the entire lot of rifles fell into the "wrong hands" , SO WHAT?? They are worth far more as collectibles than as crime guns! The M1 Garand weighs a tad more than eight pounds and only holds eight rounds in an en-bloc clip. Add to that the fact that if you don't know how to load the Garand properly the bolt will eat a hefty chunk of skin and leave you with a painful condition known as "M1 Thumb." The M1 Carbine can be had with a 20 or 30 round magazine but the round is so wimpy that they were complained about in the Korean War. The round falls roughly into the upper middle of power range for handgun rounds and the rifle is hardly concealable. Simply just another case of the Democrats going against the will of the people.

Am I to understand that there's nothing comparable to the M1 on the American market?

Jim...historically, no. Why destroy thousands of collectible rifles for no reason other than they "might" fall into the wrong hands?? Yes, they could be reproduced but the value of any collectible is in the original. Ballistically there are rifles pretty superior to the Garand, but once again, that's not the point. This administration, like most all Democrat administrations, is no friend to the 2nd Amendment and there is simply NO reason to destroy these firearms!

I imagine American gun manufacturers would be delighted to have a million cheap M1's flooding the domestic market. It's not like they make their living selling new products.

Wrong again, Jim. The average Garand today retails for close to a thousand. An M1 Carbine, depending on manufacturer, sells for several hundred to close to a thousand. They are collectibles, Jim, and that means that they do not affect firearms that are bought to actually shoot.

Sometimes a duck is just a duck, and sometimes a cliche actually works. Guns DO NOT KILL people. People kill people.

skyline, Now I am confused. If these guns are simply destined to grace fireplace mantels, how does that impact the Second Amendment? If these weapons are not intended to encourage the keeping and bearing arms to protect home and family, what's the point? I should think that the president is saving the gun collectors of America a billion dollars to spend on weapons intended for actual use.

Jimmy, does your left ever condone any rights?? These firearms are fully serviceable and I have fired many of them. Hanging it over the fireplace is up to the individual...NOT THE DAMN GOVERNMENT as run by Barry Hussein and adored by Jimmy Heim!!

Do you ever wonder what the military would do if a rebellion happened in this country in this age? How many Army people would join the rebellion? I wonder if we would get fort bragg?

What's the source of this story?
Last I saw reported (http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2012/01/116_103154.html ) was that the ban on the rifles had been lifted and 86,000 of them were to be imported for sale to Korean War veterans.
The carbines were still banned due to the higher magazine capacity, which doesn't make much sense if you are familiar with the weapons.
