Using Common Sense

I commend Commissioner Picerno’s view of same sex marriage.

Richard Fredrick stated in his letter (March 18) that folks should read a comprehensive report prepared by UNC School of Law before deciding how to vote on the subject. I merely ask you to use common sense and morals in your decision, not some marriage amendment put together by some law members.

Marriage should be between man and woman. How complicated is that? There are so many problems in this country that need priority answers, such as unemployment, high food prices, gas prices, the war, but yet some do not understand why it is not OK for two people of the same sex to marry.

Let’s be thankful each of us reading this article had a male (daddy) and a female (mama) or we would not be here.

What you are talking about is biology, not marriage.

Ok, Mr. Hill, as you suggest I will use my common sense and sense of morality to make a decision on this issue. You ready?

It makes no sense to deny all Americans the ability to legally marry the person that they love and want to spend the rest of their life with. Nor does it make any sense to prevent them from taking advantage of the same rights and obligations of that choice that all the rest of us have.

In terms of morality, it is not moral to deny all Americans the ability to legally marry the person that they love and want to spend the rest of their life with. Nor is it moral to prevent them from taking advantage of the same rights and obligations of that choice that all the rest of us have.

As native said above, I think you are conflating biology with common sense and morality. Three different things.

Again, I challenge any of you who are opposed to gay marriage to explain to me exactly how the marriage of two adults that you don't know affects your marriage? How does the marriage of Adam and Steve affect, in the slightest, your relationship with your spouse? Be specific, please.

I wonder if Mr Hill has any idea where gay people come from.

It sounds like J.R. Hill has this poster and reads it often: "Everything I ever need to know I learned in Kindergarten".

While I think I understand what the writer says about all of us having a "daddy" and a "mama," I don't believe that is the issue. Children are born every day from moms and dads, and some of those kids become (either through nature or nurture...select your choice) homosexual. I've posted before on this topic, but it is again relevant here. If you are a Christian, like I am, you know that every one of us is born into sin. The Bible says homosexuality is a sin. It also says that lust is a sin. Anger, too. I love my Christian brothers and sisters, but until you can show me where in the Bible the sin of homosexuality is "worse" than lust, anger, etc. that we (homosexual and heterosexual alike) engage in every day, then don't base your arguments on the "sinfulness" of homosexuality. If you want to oppose same-sex marriage on other grounds, then let's discuss that.

Mr Hill common sense and morality are as foriegn a concept to the far left Ideologs as faith, honor and patriotism. They genuinely have no concept of what it is to be a mainstream American. Gay marriage is not a civil rights issue or even a religious one, these people suffer from a sexual disfunction. The attempts of progressive radicals to mainstream people suffering from this is simply another attack on the traditional family, the most fundamental building block of our society. The majority as usual will support the traditional view of marriage and these extremist liberals will once again go shopping for a activist judge to overturn the will of the citizens that go to the polls to have their voices heard.

Bentpan-- "These people (homosexuals) suffer from a sexual disfunction." When people like me and you (and "them") engage in lust or anger towards others, are we part of this "disfunction?" Yes. The "disfunction" is called sin. I am guilty of it, and so are you. And so is everyone else on this blog. Telling homosexuals that they are any more sinful than you has no biblical foundation. And if you think it does, quote line and verse. Thanks.

Thatcher Try reading my entire post, I make it clear in my mind this is NOT a religious issue ( I am in fact neither Christian nor Jew ) In 1986 the APA removed Homosexuality from its list of "sexual disfunctions" Despite thousands of years of society recognising that this behavior is neither healthy nor socialy acceptable. Homosexuals are not evil or even sinners in my mind but to use these poor people to push a mental illness as normal and healthy to undermine our society is a dangerious and evil undertaking.

Bentpan, I read your entire post. I agree that homosexuality is not evil or the product of mental illness. I agree that homosexuality is not a "sexual disfunction." However, I do come to this issue (and all others) from a Christian perspective. So, whether the APA removed homosexuality from its "sexual disfunction" list (which you appear to object to) means nothing to me. Sin is sin. Those here who have ever engaged in lust, raise your hands? How about adultery (hide from your spouse!)? Again, attacking gay marriage by claiming sin gets you nowhere. There are other areas for disagreement for those who are (in my opinion) intellectually honest. Thanks.

I have a couple of questions that seem to keep coming up in my brain . . .

If Sam and Chris want to get married who checks out their sexual preference? Sam could be Samantha or Samuel. Chris could be Christine or Christian or Christopher. Birth cerificates? Maybe . . . but as many "birthers" have claimed, birth certificates can be altered.

Does the chromosome define male / female? What if a person is not just XX or XY . . . maybe XXY or XXYY? Who checks?

What is the consequence or punishment of "homosexual marriage"? Just saying that someone can't do it doesn't mean that people won't find a way to do it.

What if a same sex couple were celebate? Is it OK now because they do not have sex? Who checks? What if they just love each other and want to share their life together and want some of the legal rights that hetero couples have like hospital visits, beneficiaries, etc?

Do we develop an agency or a new department in a current agency? Sounds crazy but worse has been done by our elected officials.

To me this is an attempt of government to get too involved in the lives of it's citizens and I struggle to come to grips with these questions as well as others.. I also don't buy it that "they" want it just so they can receive benefits. Maybe some but I would guess a small precent.

BTW . . . I am a registered Rep and a devout Christian and I believe that each religion has the right to determine the defination of marriage within their faith but in a secular marriage we must give unto Cesear.

The gay marriage part of this is easy, but the amendment is so poorly written (or so malevolent) that it will make life difficult for unmarried straight couples and their children. If your the surviving spouse of a military retiree, your pension and medical benefits will be put at risk.

It's tough to find anything good in this.
