The Scotland High boys and girls used a large edge in the sprint events to finish first in front of Pinecrest at Thursday’s Southeastern Conference tri-meet held at the John Williams Athletic Complex.

A number of Pinecrest athletes achieved regional qualifying times, including Hannah Hensley, who was scheduled to undergo surgery on her left knee on Thursday. The junior qualified with a first-place finish in the 200-meter dash.

Among the other Patriot girls meeting the regional requirements were Jennie Cunningham with a first-place finish in the 400-meter run and Zuri Thomas with a win in the discus.

Individual winners for the Patriot girls also included Katie Hayes (800), Sarah Pressley (1,600) and Heather Reed (pole vault). The Patriots also won two relay events, the 3,200 and the 1,600.

Ariana Jones won three events and shared first in another as the Scot girls finished with 99 points to 69 for the Patriots and 10 for Purnell Swett. Aleksandra Majka of The O’Neal School picked up two points for a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles.

Hensley, who holds the school record in the high jump and 400, scored a meet-high 38 points in the conference meet as a freshman. She missed most of last season with the injury. Also qualified in the 100 hurdles, she hopes to return to action in time for the postseason meets.

Patriot junior Brandon Stonesifer won the pole vault and became a regional qualifier in the process. Other Patriots finishing first in running events were Chris Kelly (800 and 1,600) and Robert Anderson (3,200). James Kennedy was a double winner in the field events (long jump and triple jump) and Matt Carlson won the discus.

The Scotland boys finished with 107.5 points, followed by the Patriots with 75.5 and Purnell Swett with three.

Next Thursday’s SEC tri-meet will also be held at Pinecrest, beginning at 4 p.m. Richmond Senior and Purnell Swett will be participating along with The O’Neal School and Fayetteville Academy.
