Nice, Not Necessary

I like history, and it’s nice that the village of Pinehurst has been designated as a National Historic Landmark.

The Pilot’s article (“Pinehurst Council Gather Input on Cultural Landscape Report, Landmark Status”) mentioned that the landmark status could be used as a marketing tool. I didn’t move to Pinehurst because of its NHL status. I have vacationed in areas that have NHL status but I didn’t vacation there because of their landmark status.

I’ve heard that the village of Pinehurst received the NHL status because of its relationship to the sport of golf, Donald Ross legacy, the story of the resort movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s.

It seems to me that the National Park Service wants us to spend $120,000 for an assessment to be done by consultants that they suggest in order for the National Park Service to exert control over us.

Yes Mr. Smetana, because there is a dark smoke filled room full of men in suits (or maybe just one megalomaniac) letting out deep menacing laughter because they think their plan is coming together to exert control over the Village of Pinehurst. “All is going according to plan…” What control does the Park Service want over anyone? When did the government become a super villain of James Bond or Lex Luthor type proportions? Is it corrupt? Sure. Does it work all the time? Absolutely not. Is it trying to execute some massive conspiracy to control our lives and turn you into some kind of Brave New World or 1984 citizen of THEIR perfectly controlled society and not ours? No, and it is crazy talk to assume so.
