Mitt Romney and His Etch A Sketch

I know, I know, I just did a column on Mitt Romney last week. But let's face it: The dude's a gift that just keeps on giving.

In this case, the gift to his opponents, both Republican and Democratic, came from Romney communication director Eric Fehrnstrom. It was the day after Romney's decisive victory in the Illinois Republican primary, and the Romnoids had fanned out across the various news and political shows to talk up their candidate.

Everything was going OK until a CNN host asked the fateful question: "Is there a concern that Santorum and Gingrich might force the governor to tack so far to the right it would hurt him with moderate voters in the general election?" To which Fehrnstrom replied "Well, I think you hit a reset button for the fall campaign. Everything changes. It's almost like an Etch A Sketch. You can kind of shake it up and restart all over again."

For opponents of a candidate who already had a reputation as a flip-flopper who'd say anything to get elected, the image proved irresistible.

Sales of the classic children's toy immediately took a jump as everyone associated with the Santorum, Gingrich, and Paul campaigns, not to mention every member of the Democratic National Committee, rushed out to purchase one, the better to (figuratively) beat Governor Romney over the head with.

A Santorum spokesman even showed up at a Romney event to pass Etch A Sketches out to reporters. Newt Gingrich gave one to a young boy at one of his rallies and said, "Now you can be a presidential candidate," which no doubt both pleased the youngster and confused him to no end.

Gingrich later said that if Fehrnstrom had "set out to highlight for everybody why we distrust Romney, I think he couldn't have done a better job." Of course, someone like Gingrich, who can say on a Tuesday that "any ad which quotes what I said on Sunday is a falsehood," doesn't have much room to complain about someone else's "resets."

The fact that no one in the supposedly liberal media has yet pointed out the rank hypocrisy of his statement may be because, once again, Gingrich's campaign has faded to the point where reporters have trouble remembering that he's still actually running, and the ones who do remember don't care.

The president, as of this writing, has not commented, although one liberal blogger has already put a virtual Etch A Sketch up on the Web, highlighting some of Romney's contradictory statements. I'll tell you one thing, though: If we don't see as many Etch A Sketches being waved about at the Democratic Convention as there were flip-flops being waved at John Kerry in 2004, then the Democrats need to find a new communications team.

Now, it's true that Fehrnstrom was simply stating one of the venerable principles of presidential politics: You play to your base to appeal to the true believers who vote in the primaries, then "tack toward the center" during the general.

The problem is, we don't live in an Etch A Sketch world any more. We live in the world of YouTube and Google, where everything is recorded, and everything is available forever. Heck, Jon Stewart and "The Daily Show" have based their entire shtick around it.

Say something that contradicts what you said six months, a year, five years, or even 10 years ago, and if it was ever on video, the legion of research gnomes who work for Stewart will have your contradictions on the air by 11 the next night, accompanied by Stewart's patented pained look at the camera, the look that says, as clearly as any words, "Does this person think we're as stupid as he is?"

In addition, with the "bases" of both parties getting both farther and farther apart, and more and more hardened in their respective positions, a candidate seeking to "tack toward the center" finds him or herself with a much longer distance to sail.

Fehrnstrom's statement reflects an older mindset, one that doesn't take into account the fact that these days, information is forever, the reset button doesn't work, and all your public history resides in the cloud. The icon for the modern political scene isn't the Etch A Sketch. It's the iPad or Android phone running the YouTube app and showing videos of everything you've ever said in public.

You can shake that bad boy all you want, but you can't make the stuff you don't want to admit to go away.

So true, Dusty. That's so unbelievably true. How will Santorum try to "Etch-A-Sketch" away from his statement, that it would be better to vote for Obama than Romney? Do those people have any sense at all? I think I know the answer.

Do you think the Moore County Republicans who post here will see this as a further "vetting" of candidate Romney or will they see these gaffs as a left wing plot to make their front runner look bad?

Bigguy 1 year, 1 month ago

Both, great one Jer. Please I hope the debates keep going on and on. Heres one lib that wants Gingrich to stay to the convention, and then some.

Always bet on them to whine. Always.

It's actually a pretty good analogy and an honest one. I suppose the honest part is what you are having a problem with. There are huge distinctions between the presidential primary races and that of the general election involving only the two actual candidates running for office. To say otherwise is purely for the sake of trying to bring ridicule to Mitt Romney's campaign for your own agenda. As far as flip flopping goes, I wonder how many flip flops President Obama has done since the start of his political career. Oh yes, you are very afraid and for good reason ......Mike

JER 1 year, 1 month ago

Sorry Big Mike, this discussion ain't about Obama, it's about Romney. You can have the Obama discussion when he or his campaign says something stupid. In the meantime, we are keeping the focus on Romney on this thread. I'm not trying to ridicule any ones candidate, the candidate and their team seems to do that just fine all by themselves. Hey, if you are happy with your guy saying one thing today to get a vote and the opposite thing tomorrow to get a vote, then you will get what you deserve out of that candidate. And no, none of us who will be voting to re-elect Obama for a second term are "afraid" of our candidate. We know where he stands and we know that by re-electing his administration, the country will continue the recovery that is already in progress.

JER 1 year, 1 month ago

Come to think of it Mike, you guys really don't care what your favorite candidate says or does, do you? Because if you did, Ron Paul would be leading your pack. Best I can tell, he has outlined his views and does not change them from day to day in an attempt to appeal to whomever he is standing in front of that day. Trouble is, you guys only know that you want to defeat Obama. Beyond that, you don't have a plan...and knowing that is what scares you.

I wasn't aware that you are the board Nazi JER and would like to control the content of what is posted here on a public forum. It doesn't surprise me, I just wasn't aware. Thanks, but I will comment on the truth while you and your ilk push your ideology and LIES....Mike

Your statement...".Hey, if you are happy with your guy saying one thing today to get a vote and the opposite thing tomorrow to get a vote, then you will get what you deserve out of that candidate." ...... is hysterical! Thanks for the laugh.

DR-The big healthcare trial is this week. I'm still willing to bet dinner at Southern Prime. I know its off topic but how long before the government decides i need to buy long term care insurance to stop me from free riding on the nursing home sysytem? How long before I am required to buy an IRA account to fix the retirement system?

0

MikeNC 1 year, 1 month ago

Sorry JER, All's fair in love and politics. President Obama has his own Etch a Sketch He tries to cater to "his base" when he rejects the Keystone Pipeline on it's North Side, the other month. THEN tries to appease independents and disgruntled consumers at the gas pumps when he claims the other day, he's going to be the one to cut the red tape for the Southern End of the pipeline. So the only thing he has to figure out, is How he's going to get the oil from A to B with half a pipeline. Obama not only owns an Etch a Sketch, he also owns a Wand, Cape, Hat and Bunny. Diane

The Automatic IRA act of 2011 reqiures employers to set up IRA accounts for employees and auto enroll those employees into the retirement account. True the emp[loyee can opt out but this is only a sneeze away from an IRA mandate.

The path that the Democrats [ Communists ] have put us on will only lead to the misery and death as it has where ever it has been tried. Obama IS a lie. We have a president who has and is organizing street violence in this country and his supporters want to poke fun at Romney? I am not a huge Romney fan, but he loves this country. On that alone he is one up on Barrack Hussien Obama.

0

dustyrhoades 1 year, 1 month ago

Mike, your ignorance about Keystone is appalling but not surprising. The southern stretch was much further along in the approval process, needing only the final Army Corps of Engineers permits to break ground on. Obama hasn't reversed his position on this at all. In fact, there's a chance when the company submits a revised proposal for the rest (the key word is revised), the Administration approve it, assuming the GOP House doesn't pull the same "approve it now or approve it never" type of attempt at bullying that the President rejected last time.

As for "how he's going to get the oil from A to B with half a pipeline"...the southern portion runs from Oklahoma to the Gulf. You know they have oil in Oklahoma, right Mike? Don't worry, there'll be plenty of oil to ship to the Chinese very soon, which is what the pipeline is really about.

Shorter Miane: "No, YOU are!"

Yawn. Boring, and childish as well. What great representatives of conservatism you two are.

0

dustyrhoades 1 year, 1 month ago

Oh hey, bufords: I never did get an answer from you the other day. Remember? You said that 'Obama wrote in his book that seeing Louis Farrakhan speak was the high point of his life". I've got both the books, I've searched, and I can't find this passage anywhere. Can you help me out by giving me the quote?

0

dustyrhoades 1 year, 1 month ago

Trouble is, you guys only know that you want to defeat Obama. Beyond that, you don't have a plan...and knowing that is what scares you.

Absolutely. If you needed any more proof of how intellectually bankrupt and completely free of any actual principles so-called "conservatism" has become in this country, you have only to look at the fact that they're supporting the "Massachusetts Moderate", despite the fact that he's previously supported so many of the things they claim are destroying the country.

It's not about conservative principles, because they don't really have any. They're just furious their team didn't win.

Dusty, I tried to be nice and not call Obama a liar when he made a fool out of himself in OK propped up with pipe lines and his telepromter, but here it is. Trust me kiddo, I'm well aware of the Corp or Engineers and this project has been in the making. The point I was trying to make, is Obama has an Etch A Sketch, TOO ! As for ho hums and BORING, how bout you start coming up with some new cliches? The gift that keeps on giving is beginning to sound like a worn out 45. Diane

0

dustyrhoades 1 year, 1 month ago

The point I was trying to make, is Obama has an Etch A Sketch, TOO !

And when I asked you to point out an example...you couldn't, without distorting what actually happened, which is what you always do.

So, you lose again.

BTW, the underlying truth of the "Etch a Sketch" comment?

Far-right conservatism of the kind espoused by you and the other right wingers here makes a candidate unelectable. Everyone in your party realizes it but you. You're a minority. A fringe. You're the 27 percenters blogger John Rogers was talking about when he described the "crazifcation factor."

Conservatism is, as I've said before, a empty and dying ideology, propped up by the hate, fear, and bitterness of a rapidly aging but noisy demographic. Etch a Sketch Romney feels like he has to suck up to you people to make it through the primaries, but once he gets the nomination, he's going to drop you like a bad penny. That's what Fehnstrom was really talking about. But you'll vote for him anyway.

You're being played, Miane. Played like a cheap violin by a con artist who's not even very good at it. And all you can come back with is "No, YOU are!" Talk about your tired cliches.

dustyrhoades 1 year, 1 month ago

Oh, and Romney's still going to lose in the general election. Have a nice day, and enjoy the Obama second term.

0

geoffcutler 1 year, 1 month ago

If you're so sure about that, how come you keep writing about him as if you're panic-stricken he's going to beat your guy?

0

MikeNC 1 year, 1 month ago

Dusty ought to be hyperventilating by now with real unemployment hovering at 15%. GDP barely at 2%. Homes still underwater and devalued at approx. 20%. and record Foreclosures. And the Price at the pump threatening ,as worried Bernake put it, threatens to put us into a double dip recession. And I'm worried about Romney? Don't think so. I'd take any of our Candidates on a given day over the Wreck you gave us. I have my preference, Newt, but I'll do just fine with Romney and so will the country. Diane

0

JER 1 year, 1 month ago

geoffcutler: Yea, we are all totally panic stricken. By all means, nominate Romney, or Insaneatorem, or Gingrich. Now, if you nominate Paul, all bets are off. Oh, I just read that Cheney has a new heart, are you tuning him up for last minute run? Now that would really be freighting!!

0

geoffcutler 1 year, 1 month ago

Cheney's got a new heart?...hmm....

0

dustyrhoades 1 year, 1 month ago

how come you keep writing about him as if you're panic-stricken he's going to beat your guy?

By this logic, you and the other wingnuts are terrified of Obama, since you write about him all the time. See how silly that is?

You can do better than that lame, hackneyed and brain-dead "huh huh you must be scared of him cuz you laugh at him huh huh" nonsense, Geoff.

Miane: Newt? Really? Hilarious. Most of his own party knows he's a joke and they wish he'd go away. 27 percenter, indeed. If I'm hyperventilating, it's from laughing so hard at the GOP's Three Stooges.

0

geoffcutler 1 year, 1 month ago

Testy...testy, are we? Could this be another sign of worry? For someone so convinced of a November victory, I'd think you'd spend more time celebrating all Obama's successes instead of going after the guy you think's a sure loser...week in and out. After all, if Mr. Obama is such a shoo-in, why are you wasting words on Romney?

Am I scared of an Obama win, and that's why I write about him? I'm scared about the possibility of an Obama win, no doubt. But I've been writing about his failure as a president, not my fear of his winning a second term. My fear has nothing to do with Obama, his resume is clear. My fear is of the voter who seems to have forgotten which country we live in, what freedom and liberty mean, and that those ideals aren't granted by government.

0

dustyrhoades 1 year, 1 month ago

And I'm writing about Romney's failures and his total lack of integrity and principles. But you keep trying to pretend it's something different, so you never have to think about those as you pull the lever for a non-conservative who's pulling the wool over your eyes.

My fear has nothing to do with Obama, his resume is clear. My fear is of the voter who seems to have forgotten which country we live in, what freedom and liberty mean, and that those ideals aren't granted by government.

Guess I have more faith in Americans than you do.

0

I am no fan of Obama, Dusty, but I do wish him his health, and also the health of his family. Your Cheney joke isn't funny.

0

dustyrhoades 1 year, 1 month ago

Now who's being touchy?

0

geoffcutler 1 year, 1 month ago

It's called common decency, Dusty. Common decency. It supercedes politics. It's not being touchy, it's disgust.

0

geoffcutler 1 year, 1 month ago

We hope you'll never attain a position where you might have to make those types of decisions, Harley. But if for some unexplicable reason, we find you are in a position of having to make them, we may disagree with you, but we won't wish your ill health.

Geoff: Considering that you're one of the people whose reaction to Rush Limbaugh's calling Sandra Fluke a "slut" and a "prostitute" was "BILL MAHER! BILL MAHER!" , your 'disgust', is clearly dependent on party, and thus, utterly meaningless to me.

0

geoffcutler 1 year, 1 month ago

Actually, Dusty, I was thinking of Bill Maher, because that's exactly who you sound like. And you don't read very well. I thought Limbaugh's comments on Fluke were thoughtless and stupid. Just like yours on Cheney.

0

dustyrhoades 1 year, 1 month ago

Sorry, Geoff, when you immediately qualify "that was bad" with "but a liberal did a bad thing, too," your alleged disapproval becomes meaningless. You're just making excuses and covering for bad behavior when you do that.

Your idea of "decency" is entirely dependent on whose ox gets gored. Peddle the outrage somewhere else, cause I ain't buying.

0

geoffcutler 1 year, 1 month ago

This has nothing to do with liberals or conservatives. It has to do with crossing lines. Saying things that are better left unsaid, for common decency's sake. Don't suppose you read Beth Daniels' piece today? Try that, and see if you can't figure out what I'm talking about.
