"Imagine splashing in the pool or canoeing down the river," says Linda Gore, director of Moore County 4-H. "Sound like fun? You can enjoy this and much more at a week of Summer 4-H Camp. The 4-H camping program allows young people to get away from home and enjoy swimming, campfires, outdoor living skills and challenging leadership experiences."
Moore County 4-H will spend a week at Millstone 4-H Camp June 24-June 29. Millstone is located in the tall pines of the Sandhills, near Ellerbe, about 30 miles south of Southern Pines. Established in 1939, it was once a site where granite was quarried by hand to provide grinding stones for mills located in the piedmont of North and South Carolina. The center covers 320 acres of undisturbed woodlands and is situated within the 60,000-acre Sandhills Wildlife Management Gamelands. Near the center of the camp property is a picturesque 17-acre lake where campers can fish and canoe. >
Millstone offers traditional camping programs for youth ages 8 to 14 and is open to everyone, whether they are involved in 4-H or not. >This one-week camp provides age-appropriate, small-group experiences in a fun, noncompetitive environment. By the day, campers swim, canoe, work on a craft, learn about nature, explore outdoor living skills and tackle ropes courses. In the evenings campers learn about different cultures, create campfire programs, share skits and talents, and learn games and dances.
Anyone wishing to sponsor a youth to attend 4-H Camp should contact the Moore County 4-H office at (910) 947-3188.
