Both the Union Pines baseball and softball teams improved to 2-0 in 3-A Cape Fear Valley Conference action, notching league wins over Overhills Tuesday night in Cameron.

Up at Viking Field the Union Pines boys pulled out an 8-7 victory to stretch their current win streak to four games.

Through four innings of baseball, the home team led 7-4 after plating four runs in the bottom of the fourth frame.

Sophomore Mason Collins led the inning off with a homer to spark the rally, while Seth Breasseale and Tyler Barber also added RBIs in the inning.

On the night M. Collins went 3-for-5, hitting two doubles off the fence and driving in three runs. His older brother, senior Nic Collins, delivered a majestic moonshot to dead right field that traveled more than 440 feet on a solo round tripper to lead off the Union Pines third. It was the Vike captain's seventh home run of the season. The 6-foot-3 left handed swinging Georgetown signee was intentionally walked in his last two plate appearance of the tilt.

Tyler Davis picked up the win for Union Pines, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings to close out the game.

Down at the softball field the Lady Vikings earned a 16-6 mercy-rule win.

Junior NCSU commit Tyler Ross hit her third homer in the game for Union Pines, while sophomore Carrie Marks picked up her second pitching win of the season.

Union Pines hosts North Moore today at 6 p.m. in a cross-county nonconference softball rematch. The Lady Mustangs took the first game between the squads this season by a 6-2 margin.

Both squads return to league action at 7 p.m. Friday when they travel to Hope Mills to battle Gray's Creek.
