Mustangs Rally Past Lady Vikes

After trailing most of the way North Moore scored six runs in its final at bat to top Union Pines 9-7 in a cross county softball clash Wednesday in Cameron.

With the victory the visiting 1-A Mustangs improved to 5-2 as they picked up a season sweep against the 3-A Vikings (2-3).

Ashley Davis tossed a complete game to get the pitching win for North Moore.

The Mustangs trailed 2-1 through one inning after a two-run double by Viking sophomore Lexie Cox in the bottom of the frame.

Sophomore second baseman Amber Williams extend Union Pines lead to 3-1 with a rope up the middle for an RBI single in the third inning.

A one-out RBI off the bat of North Moore shortstop Casey Turner trimmed the Viking lead to 3-2 through three-and-a-half innings. Union Pines then answered in the bottom of the fourth as Williams and Tyler Ross each drove in a run to push the margin to 5-2.

North Moore plated one more run on a wild pitch in the sixth inning to make it a two-run tilt, before then exploding for six runs in the top of the seventh.

Gwendolyn Steslicke and Heather Dunmyer led the the way offensively for the Mustangs. From the leadoff spot in the lineup Steslicke went 3-5 with two runs,while two-hole hitter Dunmyer went 3-for-4 including a clutch two-run, two-out single in the seventh inning.

Vike shortstop Onika Williams was red hot with the stick on the night, going 4-for-4 with two doubles and scoring three runs. A. Williams finished the game 2-for-4, while Ross went 1-1 with two runs and two walks.

North Moore and Union Pines each return to conference action Friday. The Mustangs host 1-A Yadkin Valley Conference leader East Montgomery at 6 p.m. in Robbins, while the Lady Vikings travel to Hope Mills to take on Cape Fear Valley Conference rival Gray's Creek at 7 p.m.
