Vikings Hold Off Chapel Hill in Epic Tennis Showdown

Union Pines and visiting Chapel Hill engaged in an epic battle in boys’ tennis Thursday.

The Vikings grabbed a 4-2 lead after the completion of singles action in the nonconference match, but it didn’t come easy.

Adam Howard, Jordan Allen and Dylan Dinkins of Union Pines won their singles matches, all in third-set tiebreakers.

Playing at No. 1 singles, the Vikings’ John Dangerfield dropped a third-set tiebreaker by an 11-9 score to Chris Chang.

Kyle Gatti, who picked up his 34th win as a Viking, handled Aaron Weber in straight sets. Matt Lorenz, playing at No. 6 singles for the Vikings, lost to Andy Gillespie 7-6, 7-6.

Then in doubles play, Chapel Hill claimed two wins, but the match was sealed in the Vikings’ favor when Dinkins and Lorenz won at No. 3 doubles by an 8-4 score.

Union Pines, now 2-0, returns to Cape Fear Valley Conference action when it travels to Gray’s Creek on Monday.
