The Rooster's Wife presents a "string-centric" co-bill featuring Red June and Will Kimbrough, Sunday, March 4, at 6:45 p.m., at Poplar Knight Spot, 114 Knight St., Aberdeen.
Admission is $12 in advance, $15 on the day of the show. Tickets are available online at theroosters wife.org.
Asheville-based Red June brings acoustic Americana to the Spot, with virtuosity in every area, from Will Straughan's songwriting and Natalya Weinstein's fine fiddling, to John Miller's exceptional voice. Their music rejects simple categories. It's bluegrass, newgrass, old-time and modern, with an authentic feeling and a soulful approach. They will perform in Wilkesboro next month at the 25th annual Merlefest.
Ace guitarist Will Kimbrough is a modern day Renaissance man, wearing hats as a superb player, writer, producer and entertainer.
Kimbrough's body of work reflects a lifetime of performing, writing and collaborating from more angles than Da Vinci's protractor.
True to his search for universal truths, his profound musical knowledge and expert creations reflect years of learning the intricacies of folk, blues, gospel, country, rock 'n' roll, punk rock and jazz.
With songs recorded by Jimmy Buffett, Little Feat, Jack Ingram, Todd Snider and others, Kimbrough's multidisciplinary approach has led to many desirable collaborations in the studio and on-stage with well-known artists, including Rosanne Cash, Guy Clark, Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, Gomez, Emmylou Harris, the Jayhawks, Mark Knopfler, Buddy Miller, John Prine, Toumani Diabate, Kim Richey, Josh Rouse, Matthew Ryan, Billy Joe Shaver, Todd Snider, Mavis Staples, Garrison Starr, Adrienne Young and others.
Kimbrough was recognized in 2004 as the Instrumentalist of the Year by the Americana Music Association, an award that had previously been awarded three years in a row to Dobro ace Jerry Douglas.
The multitalented, active father of two continues to make a lasting contribution to every project he produces, performs and creates. He is currently touring with Emmylou Harris.
"The Rooster's Wife is thrilled he will be spending his day off that gig at Poplar Knight Spot," says Janet Kenworthy, the event organizer.
The doors open at 6 p.m.
Sandwiches from Sweet Feed are available for a light supper.
