Local Students Place in Division Competition

The Temperance Smith Alston Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Pinehurst, recently announced the winners of its 2012 Junior American Citizens competition at Given Memorial Library.
This year's theme was "Enhance the Present" and was open to all area students in grades K through 12.
In the Stamp Design category, ninth-grader John Rea, Longleaf Academy, was awarded first place on the local level, first place on the state level, and second place in the Southeast division.
In the Short Story category, Caroline Rea, grade seven, Longleaf Academy, was awarded first place on the local level, first place on the state level, and second place in the Southeast division.
The Junior American Citizens Committee is the DAR's second oldest youth-oriented committee and has been in existence since 1901. The committee fosters the idea that the rights and responsibilities of citizenship can, and should, be taught from an early age.
