The Sunrise Theater concludes the month of June with a British comedy that audiences have cheered, "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," a film in which British retirees travel to India to take up residence in what they believe is a newly restored hotel.

Less luxurious than its advertisements, the Marigold Hotel nevertheless slowly begins to charm in unexpected ways. The stellar cast of this film, which, according to Peter Travers of Rolling Stone, "never makes a false move," includes Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel, Maggie Smith and Tom Wilkinson. The director is John Madden.

This comedy/drama will be shown from Thursday, June 28, to Monday, July 2, with shows on weekdays at 7:30 p.m. and weekends at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m.

The film is rated PG-13 and runs for 118 minutes.

The following plot summary is taken from the Moviefone website: "'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' follows a group of British retirees who decide to 'outsource' their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India.

"Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive to find the place a shell of its former self. Though the new environment is less -luxurious than imagined, they are forever transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can begin again when you let go of the past."

Mara Reinstein of Us Weekly describes the film as "... vibrant ... with sublime wit and poignant insight, the film works as a pleasant springtime surprise."

Roger Ebert rated the film as -"outstanding," noting that "we suspect that the film will be about [the cast's] various problems and that the hotel will not be as advertised. What we may not expect is what a charming, funny and heartwarming movie this is, a smoothly crafted entertainment that makes good use of seven superb veterans."

The historic Sunrise Theater, located at 250 NW Broad St. in Southern Pines, is nonprofit.

Ticket prices are $7 and are only -available at the box office prior to shows. Refreshments, including beer and wine, are available.
