The Pinehurst/Aberdeen/Southern Pines area continues to be a draw for national chains, the latest addition being a Dunkin’ Donuts located — curiously, it seems — very close to a much beloved local doughnut shop known as Granny’s Donuts.
I have nothing against Dunkin’ Donuts; in fact, when I’m on the road, they have been a welcome location for a quick break.
Locally, though, and I hope our local citizens will agree and help out, it is Granny’s or nothing.
With all the available business locations in our area, one wonders why it was necessary to park the new shop a stone’s throw from such a successful local business.
We need to support our established local businesses or stop bemoaning the loss of our neighborhood shops of all types due to the marketing impact of large chains who choose to settle in our communities.
When you have a craving for a fresh cruller, or a chocolate glazed, or a great apple fritter, head for Granny’s!

Ok...how do y'all feel about Walmart and all the other grocery chains or Starbucks when there are local coffee shops

I hope Granny's will step up their game - I've been there so many times at 10am and they are already out of almost everything!

I'll take Dunkin' gladly because they are actually open more than a few hours a day. Granny's will have to compete! I like Granny's but they're never open when I'm in town.

Love Granny's with a passion, but MCResident has a point. A donut shop that's frequently out of donuts is going to have a problem.

I wonder if the letter writer, or many readers, went to Starbucks instead of the coffee shop near Hickory Tavern? Why did you do that? And DR, skyline, and MCResident are correct...if a business is not providing convenient service, competitors will arise. That doesn't mean Granny's will be hurt. Far from it! It means that Granny's will compete in the free market for customers. And they will do well! So will Dunkin' Donuts. Lastly, how many of you preferred Ragazzi's over Vito's? My guess? Zero. And it's not local vs. chain...it's great food/great service over mediocre food/service. The market (us customers) decides. Cheers!

I enjoy Granny's donuts and used to be a frequent visitor there! Unfortunately it became all too common place for them to be out of donuts early in the morning. I will always Granny's but am looking forward to Dunkin Donuts as well. There is room for both and we should welcome the jobs that DD will create when opened.

Reason being Granny's runs out is that they come in at 4:00 a.m. make donuts fresh! Dunkin Donuts that I have been to (Durham) in my humble opinion are fine but not as good as Granny's. They do offer a wider variety, and also make some nice breakfast sandwiches and darn good coffee. Think about it Granny's sell what they make, nothing left over, nothing waisted!! More companies should follow a business plan like that!!

went to Starbucks instead of the coffee shop near Hickory Tavern?
Frankie's all day everyday. Used to like the downtown SP shop before they took over the 'Hair Patrol' house.

Well let me think here, I can go to Dunkin for decent coffee and average donuts or go to The Bakehouse for good coffee and freshly made European pastries or The Broadstreet Bakery for good coffee and freshly made American pastries. Not to hard of a choice for me and I'll gladly leave Dunkin to anyone who prefers their goods.

Looking forward to having a new place to get doughnuts. Love Grannies, but it will be nice to have a place that doesn't run out early in the morning and accepts a debit card for payment.

As a long time visitor to Granny's, many of the above blog information is correct. The arrive early in the morning to make enough donuts to match the history of demand on that particular day. All their donuts are FRESH daily. You can call in your order and specify what you desire and when to be picked up. You can drive through early before work or golf and they will service you with what is available. If you desire to sleep in and come over at lunch time for a donut.....FORGET ABOUT IT ! They make donuts for the day to sell completely resulting in nothing left over to throw away or donate to the food bank, etc. All of this results in adding costs to the business model which would be passed on to the customer. Their prices are VERY GOOD; the coffee is GOOD; Vin, Bea, and Anna, are very customer oriented and personable to all. My problem, as with many others, is that Dunkin Donut's decided to park their business just down the street from Granny's. This location may have been preceived as a very good business decision or just a move to impact a local establishment. I don' really know but Granny's has my business and I get their early to get the best available, cost effective, sweets in the case.
