Scotland County scored six runs in the top of the first inning and made them hold up to hand Pinecrest a 9-5 loss in Central Carolina Summer League baseball action Monday evening.
The Patriots (1-1) committed four errors behind starting pitcher Matt Epley, and Cody Freeman and Cross Holfert homered for the Scots in the decisive frame. The Patriots picked up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the visitors answered with three runs in the top of the fifth to make it 9-2.
Trailing 9-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Epley and Dalton Bullard each singled home a run, cutting the deficit to 9-5. The Patriots had two aboard when the final out was recorded. Jackson Maples had two hits for the home team.
The earlier junior varsity game between the teams ended in 1-1 tie after five innings because of the two-hour time limitation. Rising sophomore Joe Lewis pitched into the fifth for the Patriots. Trent McKay and Tom Delaunay came on in relief and retired the side to keep things even.
The Patriots were scheduled to travel to West Stanly on Tuesday. They will return the favor by entertaining the Colts on Thursday.

The JV Team played to a 1-1 tie. This is baseball, let's have a winner. However, Pinecrest believes it's future is with middle school players instead of developing the current high school talent which they have. Is this the direction this program is headed? Will the middle school players bypass playing for their schools next spring and play for the high school? I don't think this is the case, so it is frustating to see the lack of dedication by the coaching staff to develop the talent for next years team with who will be available come spring. Politics? Fovoritism? Friendships? All monikers within the community conversations. Develop the talent to be successful next spring!

Umm, I'm pretty sure the reason why the JV games have a time limit is because they're required to have both games including the varsity completed by darkness due to not being able to use or turn on the field/stadium lights for a non-school event during the summer months. That's Moore County Schools policy (I guess to save $$$) and it's county-wide, affecting Union Pines and North Moore as well. So if you're going to blame someone, blame the the school system, not the coaches. That's the reason why all the county teams have start times of 4 and 6 p.m. for summer league games and everyone else in the division is 5 and 7 p.m. (Although I have seen other schools around the area without any restrictions place time and # of innings limits for their JV teams as well)
