Platform Service

There will be a Platform Service at Greater Works Church of Deliverance Ministries in West End, Sunday, June 24, at 4 p.m.

The service is titled "Women of Power." Women from different walks of life will speak on women of biblical times.

Greater Glory

Apostle Michael S. Dixon will be the keynote speaker tonight (Wednesday, June 13,) at 7:30 p.m. at the Solid Rock Pentecostal Holiness Church, in Aberdeen.

There will be no evening service held at Greater Glory on Sunday, June 17.

The JCECA Ministries Inc., along with the Greater Glory Pentecostal Deliverance Ministries Inc., will observe their 17th annual National Judah Conference Celebration June 20-24. The conference will be held in the sanctuary of Greater Glory, which is located at 1000 West New Hampshire Ave., in Southern Pines.

Evening services throughout the week will begin at 7:30 p.m.; 4 and 7 p.m. on Saturday; and Sunday at 11 a.m. There will be inspirational seminars on Wednesday and Thursday at noon. Southern Pines UMC

The Congregational Church of Pinehurst, UCC celebrates its children this Sunday, when the Rev. Brent Bissette presents a special sermon just for them. Sunday School classes for children 3-5 and 6-8 years of age are held the second and fourth Sunday of each month. Nursery care is provided each Sunday in the Butterfly Room by member volunteers, though children of all ages are always welcome at services.

The congregation elected John Kelly as treasurer and Gail Harrell as member-at-large at the annual meeting. Kathy Nekton will serve an additional term as chairwoman, and Kate Cote will serve as vice-chairwoman. Outgoing members Tim Maroney and Ron Sickenberger were thanked for their long and generous service to the church.

Sickenberger will continue to serve as chairman of the nominating committee.

The members will say goodbye this Sunday to choir director Chris Boveroux, who has been a celebrated member of the church

"He is only 24, and ours was his first church choir," says a spokesman.

He is the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship to Indonesia, and is leaving the church to attend graduate school at the University of Oregon.

"Though we are in the process of hiring an outstanding music director, it will be hard to replace Chris with his wonderful talent and sense of humor," says the spokesman.

The Rev. Brent Bissette and two members of church council will be attending the Southern Conference Annual Gathering in Salisbury June 14-16.

The Rev. Geoffrey A. Black, general minister and president of the United Church of Christ, will be the honored guest and worship preacher, providing a rare opportunity to meet the leader of the UCC.

The Rev. Michael J. Garber, minister emeritus of Community Congregational Church in Southern Pines, will deliver a special patriotic presentation of "I Am the Flag of This Great Nation."

Garber wrote the original piece more than 46 years ago and during his 26-year ministry at the church, it became a traditional observance each year.

Although the basic theme remains unchanged, it has been updated through the years.

Barbecue Benefit

A barbecue dinner benefit will be held for Donnie Brewer, of Robbins, a veteran who is facing cancer.

Brewer is a fan of motorcycles, and is a trucker who has driven across America. He is the son of the late Lendo and Jewel Brewer, and also a brother of Dwight Brewer.

Brewer needs help with medical bills and living expenses.

CALL Program

An English-speaking tutoring program for Hispanic mothers is conducted on Monday afternoons at the Sandhills Jewish Congregation.

The synagogue program is an extension service of the main program at the Community Presbyterian Church in Pinehurst.

After-school tutoring of Hispanic grade-school students, as well as their mothers, known as Community Assisting Learning Language (CALL), has been offered at the church for the past seven years.

The goal of CALL is to prepare Hispanic mothers for success in the work force, as well as to better enable them to help their children succeed in school and become responsible adults.

Child care for preschool children is provided during the tutoring sessions.

Prayer Service

Each month on the first Wednesday, at noon, First Baptist Southern Pines will celebrate a service of prayers, the Lord's Supper and healing.

"This is an opportunity for the people of Christ to gather, offer prayers for one another, the church and our community, break the bread and lift the cup of our Lord, and seek the wholeness of Christ in our lives and others," says a spokesman.

A healing service is held the second Wednesday of the month at 5 p.m. at The Village Chapel, Pinehurst.

"Good News Inspiration" offers gospel music, preaching, church information and other public service announcements. Occasional guest DJs are welcome. Felton Capel is a veteran announcer. Other Sunday staff members are Minister Jason Hackett, Niniji Lloyd and Pastor Ren Lee. Highland-Sharpe is the Sunday program director and lead announcer.
