Moore County deputies are looking for a man who took a truck from the driveway of a home on Joel Road in Carthage, and then led police on a chase that ended in Chatham County, just over the county line.

Police say the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

The suspect is described as a 30-year-old white male, approximately 6-foot-3 and 180 lbs. in the Moore County Sheriff’s report on the incident.

The incident was reported at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday after a resident of the home spotted someone taking the truck. She called the vehicle owner and asked if he had given anyone permission to use it. He said no and authorities were called.

The truck owner told police he had left the keys in the truck that morning when he left to go to work.

The truck was spotted in Carthage and a sheriff’s deputy pursued it into Chatham County before the subject abandoned it and fled on foot.

A Carthage police officer in the area of Priest Hill road joined the pursuit as a back-up and followed the chase from Priest Hill Road to Old River Road to Wadsworth Road, according to Carthage Police Chief Bart Davis.

Davis said his officer lost control of the vehicle on a hill, ran off the road and wrecked. The officer was uninjured, Davis said.

The abandoned truck was returned to its owner and warrants have been obtained for one count of felony larceny of a motor vehicle and one count of felony possession of stolen goods, according to police report.
