A Fayetteville developer unveiled plans today for a $20 million apartment complex along the north side of Morganton Road on the Van Camp family land that was targeted last year for an upscale outlet mall.
Watson Caviness, a managing partner of Caviness & Cates, showed the Southern Pines Town Council a conceptual master plan that includes The Legends at Morganton Road, which would feature 288 luxury apartments and a clubhouse with hotel-like amenities.
"We would love to break ground in the fall," Caviness said. "We already have the financing in place. We hope the town will expedite the approval process because we're excited about the project and what it brings to Southern Pines.
"I think it will be something you'll be proud to have here."
The apartment complex is located on 18 acres of the 115-acre tract, directly across Morganton from Brucewood Road. If approved, there will be 12 buildings consisting of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, as well as garages for rent in separate structures.
See full details in Wednesday's edition of The Pilot.

Fantastic location for this! Way better than in the airport runway safety area. Gotta wonder if our area can support 500 new apartments though.

Would gave to wonder what the monthly rent would be,if reasonable then it will be a good thing for the area,if not upper income and middle class in this area usually choose to buy,not rent,in this economy and job market rentals may often be more appealing.

Hey Matt.....you might want to read the article again....288 units....not 500.

What the heck are the people building this crap thinking?? We have more housing on the market that can't sell but our community needs a big apartment complex??? Where the heck will all the water come from to supply this large addition. Who's going to pay for the sewage upgrade that is sure to be needed?? We complain about the makeup of our schools and yet we still invite the lower economic people to come and live here. Do we want to raise the tax base or deplete it further. This is not rocket science people.

Unfortunately it is about the tax base, but have to agree with the comment made addressing that, most resort areas do not have an abundance of apartments in the immediate vicinity, soon this area will resemble Cary,or many other towns,no more the place to live but the place to get away from on the weekend, crowded, traffic jams and a mixed batch of citizans, unless your one of the fortunate that can escape to a gated community this place will soon be anywhere USA,sooner or later the charm will be gone and so will the desire to come here to retire, but thats progress for someone, just not what this area started out to be.

@cantstandya - I got a period to sell you - but that might extend your ramblings. So I'm torn...............

@TooHot, I know you were trying to say something intelligent,I just cannot figure out what it was.

Not meant to be a criticism, but I notice you don't put a space after your commas and periods. I'm seeing this more and more in books, and wonder if publishers are trying to save space? Hard to read and doesn't make it easy for readers to pause, as they should, to best pick-up writer's tone, inflection and intent.
As far as the growth goes, I'm with Dingo. "Don't it always seem to go, you don't know what you got till it's gone." Goodbye Southern Pines, hello gridlock, sprawl, and schlock growth. Hello Cary!

Did not realize this site was for comments and a on line educational outlet, being reprimanded for incorrect spelling and punctuation seems abit trivial considering the misspelling that has been displayed on this site, but if you see someone on here that is guilty of that, well just skip over their comment, not that difficult.

@Courseaire, Now that is the kind of punctuation I can understand,no wasted space and still able to comprehend without taking a breath, or blinking an eye.

Hey Kozy, I can read thanks! My point was 288 units at this development plus 220 units at Tyler's Ridge equals approximately 500 new units.

Matt, as often as I get bashed for my illiteracy and punctuation I understood your comment, you did include the totals by mentioning both projects, and also wonder if the economy here and job markets will allow a rental price that fits this area,.
