A swastika spray-painted on the sign of a Carthage church.

Representatives from a Moore County church say someone spray-painted a swastika on church sign

The vandalism occurred at Shiloh Tabernacle, in Carthage, during the week of July 4, according to an e-mail from the church's pastor.

The vandalism was reportedly noticed on the evening of July 6. The church is located at 291 Pete Kelly Road, behind the McDonald's in Carthage.

Someone had spray-painted a black swastika on the sign.

Probably done by some kids that had no idea what the sign stood for until they watched some TV show, surprised they had the intelligence to even use a can of spray paint, hope on of them reads this article,if they know how to read.

fugitiveguy, you sure are spending a lot of energy denying that anyone could have a conversation as described in Hilda's article. I've heard people talk about all kinds of prejudicial topics thinking they were in like minded company.

Am I missing something or on the wrong site,Carolina Eye conversation is on another channel is it not, just asking, not looking for trouble here.

SH59-I was just wondering if those purveyors of hatespeech described in the article could have something to do with this. Thanks for your concern.

Would have my doubts to this being done due to some article in the Pilot, mentality of those that spray paint graffiti usually is not one of a person keeping up with the news, now I may be wrong on that,it may very well have been that family from Carolina Eye marking the trail so they could find their way back home.

It's Carthage... The Klan marched there a few years ago. I'm sad but not surprised, this type of intolerance is part of the area. Some Klanners even invited residents to a cross burning in Reidsville. The worst time for Boyette was a Klan rally in the middle of town soon after he started. “When the Ku Klux Klan came to town, in ’97, that was the most negative thing,” he said. “Just ugliness, hatred, everything evil. I’ve lived in North Carolina all my life and never seen anything like it. Good experience to see that, but I hope I never do again. That was the most negative situation I ever encountered.” Anyone remember this article from John Chappell when Bob Boyette left town? Carthage has a history of race and antisemitism. Too bad these people won't see the inside of the lovely new jail the way they should, these bigots will be working there.

It is the County seat and that's why the marched there. They came from all over...probably closer to your lilypad home than you know. These idiots don't represent 99.9 percent of white people and don't give them credit they don't deserve.

"The Klan marched there a few years ago. I'm sad but not surprised, this type of intolerance is part of the area."

I look at it differently. Letting idiots like this march can be a good thing. It showcases for the entire community the type of inbred knuckledragging morons they really are. My guess is that far, far more people are turned off by them than are inspired by them. However, they are no more repulsive to me than the New Black Panthers or Louis Farrakhans disciples.

The important thing to remember was that Carthage had an anti-Klan meeting, a fish fry — lots of people came to it — all so Carthagenians could, and did, come together to pointedly and publicly ignore the klan.

@JD, Even over here on this article your resume your favorite phrase"bigots" to you everyone is a bigot,a racist,or whatever, what is your thoughts on the NAACP,are they not a form of bigotry also,or do you exclude them from your condescending remarks, with your intellect you should be plowing a field with a mule, and you should be pulling the mule that due to the fact at least the mule has more sense and probably a higher IQ.

the klan is no different from the "new black panthers"; both are ignorant, racist and laughable. all races have their "purists" - not just blacks and whites.

Blame the klan? Seems to me that since this is a Church that believes in Jesus Christ, I would venture that this was done by the godless, liberal socialist whose hate speech often graces the pages of this web site. Ever seen the anti-Christian post using such hate speech such as "Christian taliban"? Or how about blaming Christians for not being able to buy a bottle of wine of all things on Sunday Morning. I would say that this action was influnced by such hatred. Remember that it was the Nationalist Socialist Party or Nazi Party that used the swastika.

@LSM - excellant post!

people seem to forget that the"left" does stuff like this all the time just to incite and blame those on the "right". im not saying thats what happened here, but its definitely been done before. whoever did it, is a pick of crap - one way or the other!

@LSM I’m not going to disagree with you, I grew up here all my life and go to church on a regular basis so I’m not saying this as an attack but rather as an acknowledgement of reality. Yes the political Left is capable of just as much hate speech as the political Right but to say that here in the Bible Belt the Christian influence is not the reason for Blue Laws, for laws allowing the government to force businesses to close on Sunday and restricting the sale of alcohol is to ignore reality. I’m not saying it is a good or bad thing but Blue Laws are clearly religious in nature and clearly influenced by Christian principles (good, bad or indifferent).

Further, as a Christian the imagery used in the phrase “Christian Taliban” does not bother me because I can understand the symbolism of the speech. I do not take that as hate speech against the entirety of religion. Just like how the Taliban or Islamists do not represent the entirety of the Muslim faith the “Christian Taliban” for me would mean someone who uses the words of the Bible and God to inflict harm on another, such as the Klan with their (very wrong) attempt to enforce their version of Christian values.

I’ll also caution you when saying that a “liberal socialist” may use a swastika because the Nazi Party was also called the National Socialist Party. Very, very different uses of the term “socialist” in the two, they are actually almost opposed to one another in numerous ways. As fascists they positioned themselves as a separate, third option, between capitalism and Bolshevism.

It is a Tabernacle so no, they do not believe in Jesus. They are Jewish, do you know the difference?

'Standya- A rose by any other name, or in your case a brown smelly pile, is still you. Stop trying to justify your biased and backwards thinking.

"Letting idiots like this march can be a good thing. It showcases for the entire community the type of inbred knuckledragging morons they really are." Haha Fugitive, i agree with that sentiment completely. Then, of course, the conversation has to devolve into liberal vs. conservative blame game. How bout this... The person who did this is a complete moron, period.

Courseaire 10 months, 1 week ago

In addition to being a idiot, I'll bet that this person is neither liberal nor conservative - this person is completely apolitical and may also be asexual so he can f himself.

Nope just you sunshine, just you. When you make a blanket statement such as, "they enjoyed having master's" yea you fit the definition pretty well.

Shiloh Tabernacle is a Christian church, not Jewish.
