Sandhills Funniest Comic Contest Returns to Sunrise

Think you know what funny is?

Prove it by becoming part of the audience for the second annual Sandhills Funniest Comic on Saturday, July 21, at 8 p.m. at the Sunrise Theater, as part of the Moore Puns Comedy Series, presented by Arts Council of Moore County and Dr. Christine Gatti and Dogwood Dental Associates.

This comedy competition will give 15 to 20 aspiring comedians the stage with a microphone and five minutes to make you laugh enough to be voted the Sandhills Funniest Comic.

"The winner, voted by you in the audience and a panel of comedy judges, will receive the honor of returning to the Sunrise as the opening act for professional comedian Rik Roberts on Aug. 18," says Chris Dunn, executive director of the Arts Council.

The show will be presented at 8 p.m., and tickets will be available only at the door at $10 for adults and $5 for students.

"While we will present comedians whose material is clean, the show may not be appropriate for children under the age of 14," says Dunn.

The remaining shows in the Moore Puns Comedy Series are:

n Amateur Comedy Night on Thursday, Aug. 9, at 8 p.m. at The Bell Tree Tavern (155 NE Broad St., Southern Pines). Admission to the comedy show is free. Appropriate for 18 years or older.

n Professional comedian Rik Roberts, Saturday, Aug. 18, at 8 p.m. at Sunrise Theater (250 NW Broad St., Southern Pines). Tickets: $10 adults/$5 students (available only at the door)

Born in Lexington, Ky, Roberts has been headlining America's top comedy clubs since 1997, such as The Improv, The Punchline, Funny Bone, The Stardome and Zanies.
