The Right's Conditional Love

As you know, I call the Republican Party the "Party of Love," since it's an article of faith with them that it's the liberals who are filled with hate.
Unlike, say, Republican state delegate Bob Marshall of Virginia, who said recently that children with disabilities are God's punishment on women who have had abortions. (Sarah Palin has been notably silent on that particular insult to her Down syndrome baby.)
Or the Republican speaker of the Kansas House who urged people to pray to God, in the words of Psalm 108, that President Obama's "days be few, that his children be fatherless and his wife a widow." Some enterprising Republican entrepreneurs have even made this a bumper sticker.
Yes, the right is filled right to the brim with love. But it seems that right-wing love is a conditional thing.
- Right-wingers love the troops, unless they turn out to be gay, or report war crimes, or start speaking out against a war the right wing loved and cheered for. At least they loved the war until a Democrat became president, at which point the war they cheered for becomes that president's fault and something that should have been ended yesterday.
- Right-wingers love the Constitution, except the parts that grant citizenship to people who were born here.
They also aren't all that crazy about the parts that give the right to counsel or to a jury trial to people accused of crimes, or the parts that don't allow the government to just read your mail or tap your phones without any oversight whenever they feel enough concern about your activities. Unless the president is a Democrat, and then they're suddenly very, very concerned about these things.
But they still don't want jury trials for cases where someone was injured by a doctor's or a corporation's negligent acts. Those juries are "out of control."
- Right-wingers love free speech and the right of free assembly, so long as it's exercised by older white people wearing teabags on their hats. Anyone else is either an anarchist or a dirty, flag-burning hippie who needs to get one of those jobs they say don't exist because it's the president's fault.
- Right-wingers love the idea of cutting government spending, unless it's cuts to money spent on them, which they don't consider spending at all.
- Right-wingers love the idea of cutting taxes, but only if you're talking about cutting taxes on the wealthy. A tax plan that raises taxes on the poor and middle class is just fine with them. In fact, one of the right's biggest gripes now is that not enough poor people are paying federal income tax.
- Right-wingers love "family values" and demand that politicians practice marital fidelity. But only if the politicians are Democrats. Republicans who conduct years-long affairs with staffers, and who ditch their wives because "they're not young or pretty enough, and besides she has cancer," are fine.
In fact, even bringing up those affairs is "appalling," because, after all, Bill Clinton had affairs. The fact that Bill Clinton had affairs, however, is itself so appalling that it must be brought up at every opportunity.
- Right-wingers love the rich and successful and think they deserve credit for their hard work and innovation. Unless those rich and successful people are George Soros, Warren Buffett, or anyone who made their money in the entertainment industry who doesn't vote Republican. Those people should just shut up.
George Orwell, in his novel "1984," described a party that maintained its grip on power by a rigorous adherence to the principle called "doublethink."
Doublethink was described as "the power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them ... To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back from oblivion for just as long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies - all this is indispensably necessary."
Well, it certainly has become indispensable to the American right wing. No wonder so many of them go crazy.

the parts I read were right on dusty. now we know you know how ridiculous your hypocrisy looks! now let us know how your and the other democrats hypocrisy of defending tax cuts for the rich and wars under this potus while claiming they were destroying our country under the previous potus is good hypocrisy while the party of love's is so evil. good luck buddy, you sure haven't been able to make sense of it so far!

Sorry, not interested on this beautiful Sunday. Going outside now. So should all of you.

Nope, no party line spin, hype, slant or BS here, no sirree. This reminds me of the old Mad magazine spoof on writing a high school term paper. They provided all the text and all a student would have to do is substitue a few words to make the subject work for their particular term paper.....Everything you state and every name you assign a particular wrong doing to can be reversed by adding "left wingers love...", etc, etc The few particular names you mention can be substitued for democratic politicians doing the same or worse right down to a democratic presidential candidate representing your family values pitch and having affairs because "they're not young or pretty enough, and besides she has cancer," You sling crap and noise Dusty and only the foolish, naive or fellow haters of American values buy into it....Mike

I only read Mr. Rhoades column occasionally, I should know what to expect by now and not waste my time. Yet once again I've allowed his obnoxious drivil to irritate me on a lovely sunday, maybe this time I'll learn to ignore this irrelevant portion of an otherwise fine paper
nothingspecial 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Dusty, here you have exhaustively defined the extent of your hatred for "right wingers" and it's mostly subjective, prejudiced roots. It is very emotional and uneducated to label groups by calling out the above examples and ironically sort of ruins the indirect point you might have been trying to make about who the superior, loving person is. One point you made very well though - we all are capable of being idiots now and then and should especially look for potentially being this way when we get on our "high horse".

MikeNC, if it's true that "Everything you state and every name you assign a particular wrong doing to can be reversed by adding "left wingers love" then why can't there be conversations around here without the attack and accusations of one's party. I am very aware that I am not an extreme right or left person and do see benefits to each thinking on some subjects. It would be very interesting if everyone changed their log-in names and started to actually discuss subjects without claiming a side or attacking with name calling.
justpassingby 1 month, 2 weeks ago

right wingers have not made you look foolish dusty. you have made you look foolish here. the right wingers and even a few real democrats like myself have helped you look foolish but only you have been able to demean yourself to this level. actually I do blame your editor a little bit seeing how he plays you like a chump too. but he really does believe there should be more civility on theses boards. justpissingboy, the only one you've made look foolish is you. You follow me around like a little yappy dog, and always the same old bark: "You suck, Obama sucks, such and such made you look stupid, you're a hypocrite, you're a liar, yap yap yap." SSDD. Day after day after day.
Every now and then you go off your meds and start ranting incoherently, and that's mildly entertaining. but mostly you're just boring and repetitive. You're not only a troll, you're bad at it. How sad is that?

Once again, you've nailed it Dusty. Generally, I don't have a problem with someone that doesn't share my point of view. However, I do have a problem with hypocrisy. The Republican's have put on a show this election season in that area.

He did win Dusty's accolades and "post of the Week" award the other day in another thread. I asked some questions but they went unanswered.
Yes Thatcher that 'corpsman' gig is classic. It goes beyong a gaffe...wayyy beyond gaffe as a matter of fact. For a person who has such an astute grasp of the English (and other) languages it was rather bizarre. I also found interesting the time when he stated that he was proud to award the medal of honor to the first live recipient from the current wars. Unfortnatately the awardee had been dead for several years. Amazing that kind of stuff disappears from the news media as quickly as it gets there.... http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/06/obama-flubs-medal-of-honor-winner/

DR-- When you say conservatism has "...been taken over by a**holes, thugs, crooks, and grifters. Which one are you?"...are you saying you were once a conservative who cares about the future of the movement? No? Are you saying you care a wit about "who" has "taken over" the conservative movement? No? Having now laid that bare, my wife, kids, and friends would say I'm none of the options you mentioned. And I will not accuse you of being those things just because you are a liberal.

I love it when a bunch of adults get together and solve problems. It gives me so much hope for America. It is certainly easy to understand why the Republican primary process has been the fun filled event that it is. We have on exhibit here, the core of the constituency that the candidates are trying to appeal to. One week, they all want Caine, next week, they all want Perry, following week they think Gingrich is the one. This group of right wing believers are so easily led that Dusty can get them going in circles with just a couple of well placed words. It is really fun to watch but it makes me nauseous knowing that they can be so easily manipulated.

Dusty, once again, you've written an insightful and pithy column. You are exactly right that conservatives can discount something today and find it worthy tomorrow - depending on how it fits their purposes. Dusty before you're granted victim status here I'd like to note again several of us you have attacked here for calling you out for your column's obvious subjective, prejudicial attack on "right wingers". You have no trouble lumping all who disagree with you together for the most part as "a**holes, thugs, crooks, and grifters". This should be called out by those of both parties/affiliations who do it as not constructive, no matter how entertaining it might be.

"- Right-wingers love the Constitution, except the parts that grant citizenship to people who were born here. " Dusty, I thought you were a lawyer ? What part of the law did you not understand? Even IF he had been born in Hawaii
The point is, to be a natural born citizen, one must have 2 parents who, at the time of the birth in question, be citizens of the United States. As Obama’s father was not a citizen, the argument is that Obama, constitutionally, is ineligible to serve as President.
From the Constitution: Article II - The Executive Branch Note
Section 1 - The President
No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.
Back in 1875, the United States Supreme Court, in Minor v, Happersett, ruled that:
“Natural Born Citizen” was defined as children born of two U.S. citizens – regardless of the location of the birth. It found: “The Constitution does not, in words, say who shall be natural-born citizens. Resort must be had elsewhere to ascertain that. At common-law, with the nomenclature of which the framers of the Constitution were familiar, it was never doubted that all children born in a country of parents who were its citizens became themselves, upon their birth, citizens also.”
They are not saying he is a citizen, if it is proven he was born in Hawaii. They are saying he is not a NATURAL BORN citizen. His father never became a US citizen. He remained a subject of the King of England and returned to Kenya to become a part of their government

If you read the comments for a few days from the left and right you'll see very quickly that most of the name calling and hatred spewing garbage comes from the left side of the blog.
And the video of hippos with diarrhea came from the right (of course, the wingnuts found it funny. Not surprising, as small children always find poop funny). Then there was the childish Dumpy Dumpy Dumpy and S-head 59 from the sock puppet. Which you had no problem with, which, ONCE AGAIN, proves the point of my column.
Seems like y'all need to be addressing those beams in your own eyes before you start picking at the mote in mine.

He used to say that he couldn't ever bring himself to join either the Republicans or the Democrats because every time he thought of joining the Republicans, they'd do something greedy, and every time he thought of joining the Democrats, they'd do something stupid. wdd101st: I can't believe anyone with a rational mind still questions Obama's eligibility to be president. What a smoke screen designed to keep people from really thinking."
I guess you did not comprehend what you read.
"From the Constitution: Article II - The Executive Branch Note
Section 1 - The President
No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States."
The Constitution says that the person that wants to be President must be a "NATURAL BORN CITIZEN". Didn't say anything about people not being citizens because they were born here. Now read the next part.
"Back in 1875, the United States Supreme Court, in Minor v, Happersett, ruled that:
He remained a subject of the King of England and returned to Kenya to become a part of their government. "
This is what is in the Constitution and is the law of the land.

How many are aware that Obama is being sued in Georgia, that there was a court hearing and that Obama nor his lawyers showed up??
"Cedartown resident among those filing lawsuit against Obama by Melody Dareing

A Georgia administrative judge heard more than two hours of arguments Jan. 26 regarding a challenge to President Barack Obama’s name being on this state’s primary ballot.
The court case has made national headlines. One fact not widely reported, however, is that one of the indidivuals who is spearheading the state case is a Cedartown resident."

Media Blackout in Obama Georgia Ballot Eligibility Case
By Cindy Simpson
Last week, I noted that Obama turned his back not just on Arizona's Governor Jan Brewer, but also on the laws of the State of Georgia. I closed my column, "Georgia Ballot Challenge: Obama Walks on By," with the observation: "And most of the media has followed along right behind him."
At the time, I had just witnessed an historic hearing that actually discussed the eligibility of the sitting president of the United States to run for a second term. The president had been subpoenaed to appear, and instead of his attorney respectfully following protocol to have that subpoena recalled, both Obama and his attorney, Michael Jablonski, simply failed to show up at all or offer any defense whatsoever.
Isn't there a headline in there somewhere?"

Looks like the Georgia judge doesn't think much of the bogus subpoena for the POTUS to come to a Georgia state courtroom:
Judge Michael Malihi, who recently refused to quash the subpoena summoning Obama, never addressed the request. He cut off another lawyer when he began to complain that Obama’s no-show amounted to “contempt for the judicial branch.” “I’m not interested in commentary on that, counselor,” Malihi quickly interjected during the hearing, which drew about 80 spectators and members of the media.

@ DR
"Over the last several weeks, Obama’s attorney, Michael Jablonski, had attempted several tactics to keep this case from moving forward. He first tried to have it dismissed, then argued that it was irrelevant to Obama. After that, Jablonski argued that a state could not, under the law, determine who would or would not be on a ballot and later, that Obama was simply too busy with the duties of office to appear.
After all these arguments were dispatched by the Georgia Court, Jablonski, in desperation, wrote to the Georgia Secretary of State attempting to place Obama above the law and declared that the case was not to he heard and neither he nor his client would participate.
Secretary of State, Brian Kemp, fired back a letter hours later telling Jablonski he was free to abandon the case and not participate but that he would do so at his and his clients peril."
The above is a piece taken form the article linked below. It is an outline of what took place during the trial. Still wondering why there was no nation press there? Is the media still covering for Obama?

Obama said he'd televise health reform negotiations on C-SPAN
Updated: Friday, July 10th, 2009 | By Angie Drobnic Holan
During the presidential campaign, Barack Obama said several times that he intended to negotiate health care reform publicly. In fact, he said, he'd televise the negotiations on C-SPAN, with all the parties sitting at a big table. That way, Americans would be more engaged in the process and insist on real change.
"That's what I will do in bringing all parties together, not negotiating behind closed doors, but bringing all parties together, and broadcasting those negotiations on C-SPAN so that the American people can see what the choices are, because part of what we have to do is enlist the American people in this process," Obama said at a debate in Los Angeles on Jan. 31, 2008.
The special interests and lobbyists, he said, "will resist anything that we try to do. ... And the antidote to that is making sure that the American people understand what is at stake."
We missed this promise when we first made our database, but thanks to thorough reporting on it from the McClatchy News Service , we're adding it now. ( Read their story .)
The McClatchy report showed that, so far, substantial negotiations on health reform have been held behind closed doors. These include two agreements with the drug industry and hospitals to reduce costs over the next 10 years. In Congress, some of the committee bill writing sessions have been open, but negotiations are also taking place behind closed doors. That's routine in Congress. Much of the difficult negotiations take place in private sessions, before bills come to committee or the House or Senate floor. read more at link

The protestant work ethic that helped to build America was a GREAT thing and and a not-so-great thing. Many of the people in my family have been notorious"work-a-holics". So, we've have had numerous members die much too early in their lives. That's why I caution my son about all of the work he does but he does try to eat a better diet and exercise. My older brother is the LONGEST living male in our family. He's 70 now and why has he lived so long? Because he retired at 45 and never worked a full time job again. I was a Social Worker in the WorkFirst Program for 5 yrs and it was the most rewarding job that I ever had. Many peoples lives are disordered and unskilled. They just needed a decent teacher and good amount of encouragement. People give up on people too quickly and so they get discouraged and then they themselves give up. I was pretty good at problem solving and so most of my clients out performed others. Not all were successful but the majority were. We are failing to teach and failing to understand. Of course having personal success is the good part about working hard and I'm glad for you Thatcher that your hard work paid off for you also. I am so very proud of my son. He's out-performed me by leaps and bounds but.....he still calls me up to ask for advise.

I don't know, AFCHIEF, why do my tax dollars have to support someone who wants to fly from New York to LA? Or drive from Southern Pines to Raleigh? How about you use your taxes to pay for all the stuff you want to do and the rest of us will use our taxes to pay for what we want to do? That should work OK, don't you think? How about if only the folks who are in favor of wars have to pay for them? Just as every person in the military isn't a hero, every person without a job is not a leach on society. The conservative policy is always being at war so that people who cannot find real jobs will have something to do. If that statement seems really stupid to you, then you can relate to how a liberal views your idiotic statement, "the liberal policy of rewarding people NOT TO WORK". Please go to your old CO and ask him permission to start using your brain.

Obama said he'd televise health reform negotiations on C-SPAN Updated: Friday, July 10th, 2009 | By Angie Drobnic Holan
Dated a full year before Obama did exactly what he said he was going to do...then the GOP dismissed it. Apparently, the wingnuts think every single meeting should have been televised, which has never been done on any major bill in the history of the country. But, of course the black President gets hled to impossible standards that no white President has ever been asked to meet. It's the poll tax and the bogus "literacy test" writ large.
dustyrhoades 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Oh, and birtherism=racism. No question. No white President has ever been subjected to such prolonged and ridiculous attacks on his citizenship.
Demanding that the POTUS show up at a state administrative law hearing in Georgia is ridiculous, and if some antiwar protestor had tried to to it to Bush, there would have been widespread jeering. But, as always, the black President has to do what the white folks demand, including show up whenever some crazed and frequently sanctioned nut ball attorney snaps her wrinkled fingers.
The fact that wdd101, whose overt racism has been demonstrated here over and over, is still flogging this birther foolishness just reinforces the point. Go post this nonsense at Stormfront, you pathetic Nazi.

So above you infer only dumb people are in the military. But once again you point out the liberal support for our military. At the first chance a liberal president always wants to have a weak military. Carter, Clinton, and now your lapdog Obama.
You might have a great idea on conservatives and liberals paying seperate taxes.
LIBERALS can pay taxes for ALL welfare programs, prisoners on death row, free college, abortions, cars like the Chevy Volt, costs for the UN
CONSERATIVES can pay for the strong military to defend the sheep and ALL THE SMART people
For common uses like roads and infrastructure maintenance we can share these taxes.

NO ONE is "rewarded" for not working. They might get some "help" when they either can't find a job or are fired/laid off from a job. As a WorkFirst Social Worker AFCHIEF, the "problem" was NOT getting my clients to want to work.........it was getting employers to hire them. Part of my job was also to "recuit" businesses to HIRE our clients. And let me tell you, that was much more difficult than you can imagine. Give people a chance? Hell No, was a response I received a lot. Too many of you are pigeon-holing many of our problems and situations. You're just NOT looking at the entirety of what's going on and so are quite narrow-minded. There are no picture perfect employees but they all should have a chance to work those imperfections out. I didn't even know how to file papers when I got my first office job but because my supervisor took the time to teach me I learned rather quickly. That was a Goverrnment job. If it had been private sector I probably would have been fired right away. My son in NYC had Mass Transit to get him to all of those part time jobs. Not necessarily so in smaller towns and cities. I had to also TRY to arrange for transportation to and from these jobs. Many times I just couldn't get any arranged and so the client of course ended up NOT being able to continue with the job. There are so many more factors other than a person simply working a job and getting paid an income to help "pay their way". Simple solutions are just not so simple anymore but having more and more businesses begin to employ more people would be a good start. Let's just hope a lot of NEW jobs are created and that a lot more companies bring the jobs back from China.

Why do we continue to spend foolish money we do not have only to borrow it from China and others? If Obama and his administration would have actually focused on jobs three years ago as he said he was going to; job growth would help alleviate the deficit and drive the government programs our citizens need. What happened to the Obama we see and hear in this video. Listen to the debt numbers he uses while calling President Bush a slew of names. And now I guess it's OK for him to have doubled down. While the Bush spending was bad enough, it was prior to the 'melt down'....the spending now (post melt down) has got to be considered worse by any sane standard. We should now know better than to borrow 40 some cents on every dollar our government spends; but the administration does not...or does not care....Mike

What's disgraceful is the way you use a child you don't even know as a way to change the subject from your own failure to debate.
Stop using a Down's Syndrome child as a human shield. It's despicable.

I have a disabled child Dusty. You are the despicable one. You have no clue how ignorant you sound. Come by and ridicule my child. You can even pretend I'm Sarah. I will show you something about a bloody shirt.

No one is ridiculing the disabled. I'm ridiculing the type of scumbag who'll try to use a disabled child as a rhetorical tool to avoid debate. Like Sarah Palin. And I'm not worried about anyone "showing me" anything when they troll while hiding behind an alias like a coward.
Once again, the right wing nuts prove my point: they say they love disabled children, but they'll gladly use their disabilities to score political points.
