The Martin brothers of Pinehurst just keep on winning golf tournaments, but this time it was Zachary’s turn as he claimed a six-stroke victory in the prestigious International Junior Golf Tour’s Winter Shootout held at Eagle Pointe Golf Club, in Bluffton, S.C.
Martin opened with a brilliant 69 in the boys’ 15-19 age division, then kept the rest of the field at bay on Sunday with a 74 for a 36-hole total of 143.
Martin made two birdies and no bogeys in the 2-under-par 69 on a course that is known for tight fairways and undulating greens. He credited his success to the strategy of using his driver sparingly, hitting it only twice in the round of 69.
“The key was keeping the big dog in the bag,” Martin told tournament officials.
The 69 was the low round of the event and gave him a five-shot lead going into Sunday’s finale. He ended any hopes of challengers with a clutch birdie on the challenging 11th hole.
Evan Smith of Bluefield, W.Va., shot 74-75—149 to claim second in the division, while Shosei Inokawa of Japan was third with 151.
Joshua Allen of Wilson shot 151 to win the 14 and under division, with Shogo Ito of Japan second at 154.
Lydia Gumm of Radcliff, Ky., shot 147 to win the girls’ division by five strokes over runner-up Moyu Sasaki of Japan.
