The Alfred Moore and Temperance Smith Alston Chapters of NSDAR held a joint Christmas tea at Penick Village on Saturday, Dec. 10.
Representatives from Marines Toys-for-Tots were present. Regents Lora Buelow and Sue Scherff presented them with new toys provided by members of both chapters. The toys were to be distributed in the Moore County area.
Marines Toys-for-Tots began in 1947 in Los Angeles under the leadership of Major Bill Hendricks. He was a Marine Reservist on the weekends and the director of public relations for Warner Brothers in his civilian life. In 1948, Walt Disney designed the first promotional poster and the logo which is still being used. Toys-for-Tots became a national project for the Marine Reserve that year. The goal of Marines Toys-for-Tots is to bring the joy of Christmas to needy children.
NSDAR is a nonpolitical volunteer women's service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America's future through better education for children. Both chapters recognize local students for outstanding participation in essay contests and Junior ROTC.
