The Pinecrest girls got James Moore Gym rockin’ with a 47-36 win over first place Richmond Senior Friday night. Later the Patriot boys did their part to keep the noise level high with a 53-46 upset of the Raiders.
The Patriot girls took advantage of a Raider squad that was missing two starters to jump out to a 16-10 lead after one quarter. Keegan Lynch scored five of the points, including a three, and Felicia Painter handed out four assists and picked up two steals in the period.
Janea Williams dominated in the paint in the second quarter, scoring eight of her game-high 19 points as the Pats expanded their advantage to 28-19. Jasmine Chalmers had a big third period with four points, two steals and a pair of assists.
By the time coach Mike Loutzenheiser’s squad went into its delay game with four minutes remaining in the contest, the margin was 19 points. The Pats improved to 2-2 in the Southeastern Conference and 9-8 overall. The Raiders dropped to 3-1 and 11-4.
Senior forwards Greg Barnes, with 13 points and 15 rebounds, and Traivon Williams, with 10 and 12, both had double-doubles for the Patriots in the second game.
Coach Andrew Lacey’s team seemed befuddled by the trapping defense of the Raiders as it fell behind 10-4. But they got their bearings and took a 14-10 lead on back-to-back assists by sophomore Kardashian Ragin for a jumper by a Williams and a three by Adam Cummings.
Later, a pair of free throws by Justin Ray made it a 15-0 run and a 19-10 lead for the Patriots. A 9-0 Raider run tied the game at 19-19. The visitors took a 40-34 lead late in the third period on a pair of threes by Josh Calhoun.
But the fourth quarter belonged to the home team. The Pats took the lead for good at 45-44 with 3:50 remaining on a three by Cummings from Barnes. They limited the Raiders to five fourth quarter points and went 8-for-12 at the charity stripe to sew it up.
The Patriots improved to 2-2 and 7-11 and while the Raiders fell to 1-3 and 12-3. Cummings and Ray were also in double figures for the winners with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Calhoun led the Raiders with 13.
