PHS Wrestlers Win Again

The Pinecrest wrestling team remained undefeated in the Southeastern Conference with a 56-20 win Wednesday over Scotland County High School.

Scotland earned the first four points of the meet with a major decision at 160 pounds before Pinecrest’s Ryan MacGuire (18-13 overall record) pinned Deon Johnson at 170 for six points on the scoreboard.

The Pats gave up four more points with another major decision loss at 182 before winning the next six matches to take a huge lead in points.

Kellen Winingham (14-7) pinned Mathew Sabin at 195, Luke Fetla (32-2) took a forfeit at 220, Calvin Farlow (8-4) pinned Tristan Strong in the heavyweight class, Irvin Enriquez (31-2) pinned Joe Dinkis at 106, Zac Lupien (23-11) pinned Patrick Hamilton at 113 and freshman Ben Remington (4-0) pinned John Holloway at 120.

Scotland took six points with a fall at 126 before Pinecrest’s Dallas Roemer (31-3) earned five with a tech fall over Raylon Jacobs at 132. The Scots brought their score to 20 with a final pin at 138 and the Pats earned their final 12 points with pins at 145 and 152, respectively, for Sawyer Bateman (21-8) over Conrad Chance and Dustin Roemer (30-0) over Tyler Dennis.

In the Fury Dual Team tournament held Jan. 7 at Forsyth Country Day School, the Patriots made a clean sweep of things.

Pinecrest went 4-0 to capture the first-place trophy for the tournament in Forsyth, while team captain Dustin Roemer won the most outstanding wrestler award.

Pinecrest, currently ranked No. 4 in the 4-A division of the coaches dual team poll at retrorankings, beat teams from Northwest Guilford (29-38), Ledford (20-50), Southeast Guilford (34-48) and Southlake Christian (24-47) in running its team record to 20-1 (3-0 conference).

Dustin Roemer, a senior ranked No. 1 in 4-A at 152 pounds, went 3-0, collecting a forfeit and two pins. Sophomore Rider Excell, ranked No. 4 in 4-A at 160, also went 3-0 with a forfeit and two pins.

Fetla, ranked No. 3 in the 4-A division, went 4-0 in the 220-pound weight class with a forfeit and three pins. Enriquez, ranked No. 4 in 4-A, went 4-0 at 106 with two pins, a 6-2 decision and a 16-2 major decision. Junior Jonah Caliri, wrestling up at the 182-pound weight class, went 3-0 with three pins against Ledford, Northwest Guilford and Southeast Guilford. Sophomore Dallas Roemer, ranked No. 3 in 4-A, went 3-0 at 132 with a pin, a 15-0 tech fall and a 10-0 major decision.

The Patriots were scheduled to participate in the Mustang Stampede Individual Tournament Saturday before hosting their next conference dual meet against Richmond Senior this Wednesday at 6 p.m.
