Sport Briefs: Falcon Boys Topple Lee Christian

The O’Neal School’s varsity basketball teams had mixed results against visiting Lee Christian Tuesday at O’Neal.
The boys claimed a 58-42 win over Lee Christian, while the Falcon girls fell by a 43-39 count to the visitors.
In the boys’ game, the Falcons jumped out to a 17-6 first-quarter lead and never trailed on the way to the win. Jacob Talbert led O’Neal in scoring with 22 points, while Zeb Viskovich added 16 points. Ryan Williams had eight points for the Falcons, who are now 5-8 for the season.
In the girls’ contest, the Falcons (0-12 overall) had a three-point lead in the final quarter, but saw the visitors go on a 17-10 run to end the contest. O’Neal sophomore Mary Dixon had 14 points, followed by Maggie Jackson with eight. Other Falcon scorers were Maeve Bartiss with seven, Claire Russell with six, and Taylor Shelton with four.
The Falcons will celebrate homecoming tonight when Faith Christian comes to town to play at O’Neal.
Bears Defeat Mustangs
North Moore’s varsity basketball teams suffered league defeats to visiting Chatham County Tuesday in Robbins.
The boys fell in a tight 51-50 Yadkin Vally Conference clash, while the girls were handed their first league loss of the season when the visitors claimed a 51-34 win.
The Mustang boys are now 1-10 for the season (1-5 YVC). The girls are 5-1 in the league and 8-5 overall.
Next up for the Mustangs are home games tonight against league foe West Montgomery.
Viking Wrestlers Win
Union Pines’ wrestling team picked up a conference win Wednesday with a 54-18 decision over Gray’s Creek in a dual team match held at Gray’s Creek.
The Vikings are now 2-0 in the Cape Fear Valley Conference and 7-6 overall in dual matches.

Viking JV Girls Top Eagles
The Union Pines girls’ junior varsity basketball team picked up another conference victory Tuesday evening, defeating visiting Western Harnett 29-24.
The Lady Vikings are now 4-1 in the Cape Fear Valley Conference and 9-2 overall.
Sophomore Carrie Marks came up big in the first quarter, scoring six points as the Vikes took a 10-3 lead at the end of the frame.
The second quarter was dominated by defense, as the Vikes took a 12-7 lead at halftime.
Both offenses came alive in the third quarter, as five players scored for the Vikings.
The third quarter also saw the Eagles get a spark from freshman Ebonee Gilchrist, as she scored eight points in the quarter, including two three-pointers. After three quarters the Vikings led 21-17.
Rachel Breasseale led a fourth-quarter surge by the homestanding Vikes, as they increased their lead to 29-18 with one minute remaining. Western Harnett, playing against the UP reserves, managed to collect six points, cutting the lead to 29-24 at the buzzer.
The Vikings will step out of conference Friday, as they travel to Chatham Central for a rematch with the Lady Bears.
Game time is 5 p.m.
