The Sunrise Theater rings in the new year with a comedy that has garnered a host of award nominations and that one critic called "a cockeyed comic triumph."
"Young Adult" stars Academy Award-winner Charlize Theron as a woman who revisits her hometown to relive her high school glory days and forms a bond with a former classmate, a man who hasn't gotten over high school either.
This film runs Jan. 5-10 with shows weekdays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m.
This film also stars Patton Oswalt, Patrick Wilson and Elizabeth Reaser and was directed by Jason Reitman ("Up in the Air"). It is rated R and runs for 94 minutes.
The following plot summary is taken from the film's website:
"Mavis was the quintessential 'popular' American teenager. She was beautiful and excelled in everything she did. She was also self-absorbed and brutally judgmental. Every girl in high school wanted to be her, even if they detested her. After high school, Mavis left her small town of Mercury, Minn., and moved on to the big city of Minneapolis. Here, she continued her success into adulthood by becoming an accomplished writer of a popular teen book series called 'Waverly Prep.' More and more, her own life begins to resemble that of her fictional teenage heroine as fantasy and reality intertwine, which is especially confusing since she is now in her 30s. When she receives an email birth announcement from Beth Slade, the wife of her high school sweetheart Buddy, she snaps. This email becomes the catalyst that drives Mavis to go to drastic lengths to reclaim the life she once knew."
Theron has been nominated for a 2011 Golden Globe Award and Oswalt for a Critics Choice Award.
Rafer Guzman, of New York Newsday, writes that the film features "... a fearless performance by Charlize Theron.... [Patton] Oswalt's sensitive performance is the film's second heart."
Stephen Rea of The Philadelphia Inquirer agrees, calling "Young Adult" "a pitch-black comedy steeped in bitterness and regret. ... Theron is thrillingly nasty as Mavis."
The historical Sunrise Theater is located at 250 NW Broad St. in Southern Pines. Tickets for all shows are $7 for adults. Refreshments, including beer and wine, are available. All Sunrise Theater movies are commercial free.
