Traivon Williams scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Pinecrest boys (5-9) to a 62-40 victory at Red Springs (0-11) Tuesday evening.

Earlier, the Patriot girls (7-6) were defeated 36-32 by the Red Devils (6-6). Both Patriot squads were tuning up for Friday’s Southeastern Conference openers at Lumberton.

The Patriot boys jumped out to a 9-2 lead with the last five points of the run coming on a three-point play by Brendan Ortiz in transition and then a steal and a bucket by the sophomore. Williams and Frankie Painter each scored six points in the second period as the Pats stretched their lead to 33-18 at halftime. The closest the home team got after that was 14 points.

Adam Cummings was the only other double-figure scorer for the Patriots with 11 points. Painter and Ortiz added nine each, and Kardashian Ragin contributed four assists. Williams was eight-for-eight from the charity stripe. Quinn Lowery led the home team with 13 points.

Playing for the second game in a row without 6-foot-3 center Janea Williams (illness), the Patriot girls took a 10-7 lead at the end of a quarter on a three by Keegan Lynch. Points were hard to come by for the visitors after that.

The Red Devils prevailed in spite of committing 35 turnovers. The difference maker was guard Robyn McPhaul who went seven-for-eight from the free throw line in the fourth quarter and finished with 16 points. Felicia Painter scored 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Patriots.
