Been through this with my GSD. Not fun. Tips: post laminated photo copies everywhere. "Missing German Shepherd"; color photo of dog; cell phone/home phone; tell people not to chase or call dog's name, but to call your cell phone. GSD's typically only answer to handler, so people chasing and calling his name DOES NOT help, only makes the dog skittish. On a map, track every call's location. Lost dogs almost always travel in a large circle. It will return to the location it was lost from, eventually. The owner/handler needs to go to the nearest sighting and wait. Tip: place pieces of cut up sheet or pillow case (unwashed and full of scent) from the bed of the person who the dog is closest to at known sightings, and, place the dog's food at known sighting locations. This keeps the dog hanging around instead of wandering. DO NOT chase the dog; also, if dog has a best canine friend, take that dog with you to recent sightings. Odd as it is, GSDs will often not come even to an owner when they are in this panic/flight mode, but will come to a dog they recognize. Good luck!
