Osteoporosis, or a condition of porous bone, is a disease in which bones become more fragile.

Osteoporosis is characterized by a decrease in normal bone density due to the loss of calcium and collagen. A loss of bone density can cause bones to become brittle, and in turn, lead to frequent fractures and other serious effects. Low bone density is a major risk factor for developing osteoporosis.

Although there is no cure for osteoporosis, early detection and treatment can decrease risk of future fractures.

On Thursday, March 8, women will have the opportunity to learn more about their risk for osteoporosis with a free bone density screening offered from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. at Randolph Hospital, in Asheboro.

Women will receive a free heel screening and in the process learn more about Randolph Hospital's osteoporosis services.

This screening is one of Randolph Hospital's community education events offered each month to promote health and wellness.
