North Moore junior wrestler Kyle Kidd made it all the way to the championship match in the 182-pound class at the East 1-A Regional held at Monroe last weekend.
Kidd dropped his match in the title bout to familiar foe Carson Joyce from Chatham Central. Kidd lost a 6-2 decision to his fellow Yadkin Valley Conference foe.
Even with the loss, Kidd qualified for the state 1-A tournament that started Thursday at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Kidd, the No. 2 seed from the East, squared off against the West’s No. 3 seed Tanner Buchanan from Mitchell County.
Kidd wasn’t the only wrestler from North Moore to participate in the regionals. He was joined by five teammates, with four winning at least one match.
Logan Stancil (145 pounds), Oliver Castrejon (170), Dean Thomas (195), Xisto Hernandez (220) and Joe Davis (285) wrestled in the regionals for the Mustangs.
Kidd, the No. 4 seed in his class, won his opening match over 13th seeded Carson Gramley from Spring Creek.
Kidd pinned Gramley at the 3:51 mark. In the second round, Kidd pinned Hun Wang from the North Carolina School of Science and Math. Kidd got the pin at the 3:59 mark, sending him to the semifinals against the No. 1 seed Forest Stewart from Princeton. Kidd outlasted Stewart for a 3-0 decision. After falling in the championship match to second seeded Joyce, Kidd enters the state tournament with a 28-6 record.
Dean Thomas (fifth seed) and Hernandez (eighth seed) both won their opening-round matches by pins, with Thomas pinning Princeton’s Cody Pope and Hernandez pinning South Davidson’s Cody Farrington. Both wrestlers lost their quarterfinal matches, then won their first-round match in the consolations bracket.
Hernandez beat Dale Hudnell from Pamlico County. Thomas beat Kevin Lipscomb from Spring Creek.
Thomas was knocked out of the double-elimination tournament by North Rowan’s Eugene Coney by a slim 9-8 decision. Hernandez fell to another North Rowan wrestler, Cecil McCauley.
Davis lost his first-round match, then bounced back to beat South Stanly’s Jonathan Beachum by a pin and then lost his second match to South Davidson’s Wyatt Beck. Stancil also lost a first-round match to the eventual champion Zach Winegarden from Southwest Onslow. Stancil won his next match over South Davidson’s Zachary Anthony and was ousted from the tourney by Pamlico County’s Blake Holister.
Castrejon lost both of his matches, first to North Rowan’s Thomas Fowler and then to Pamlico County’s Eric Deoliviera.
The overall conference made a good showing with North Rowan winning the team title with 228 points, while Chatham Central finished fourth with 102 points. North Moore was 15th overall with 43 points.
The league sent a total of 19 wrestlers to the state tourney, with North Rowan having nine to qualify and Chatham Central four, South Davidson and East Montgomery two, and West Montgomery one.
