In celebration of Women's History Month (March), the League of Women Voters of Moore County is presenting its fourth annual "Lunch With Legends: An Afternoon With Historic Women" on Tuesday, March 13, at Little River Golf Resort.
"The success and reputation of 'Lunch With Legends' continues to grow thanks to writer and producer Mary Lou Bernett and the dedicated women who portray our legendary guests," says local and state League President Jo Nicholas. "This program has become our biggest fundraising event and is critical to the support of our continuing local voter services work."
"Lunch With Legends" features stunning, live portrayals of three great women in America's history. The "special guests" for the 2012 luncheon will be Revolutionary War soldier Deborah Samson, portrayed by Charlotte Gallagher, of Aberdeen; women's rights advocate Lucy Stone, played by Susan Conrad, of Pinehurst; and first lady Lou Henry Hoover, performed by Dot Greenwood, also from Pinehurst.
Deborah Samson was the first female to ever serve in the American Army. She disguised herself as a man and went on to serve in combat during the latter stages of the Revolutionary War.
Lucy Stone was a prominent American abolitionist and suffragist - a vocal advocate and organizer for women's rights.
Lou Henry Hoover was the multi-talented wife of President Herbert Hoover. She was an intellectual giant who organized international war relief efforts, served as national president of the Girl Scouts of America, and was a major advocate for women's rights and volunteerism in America.
The actors portraying the legends are dressed in authentic period costumes and provide an in-character presence during lunch and social hour.
But more importantly, during the program they deliver the moving and often emotional words actually written and spoken by the women whose parts they are playing.
Local musician, singer and producer Tom Bernett will once again act as master of ceremonies, narrate the program, and provide a patriotic musical finale.
"'Lunch With Legends' offers the opportunity to support the League of Women Voters' vitally important nonpartisan voter education efforts here in Moore County, while enjoying a delicious luncheon and experiencing a truly fascinating presentation," says Nicolas.
Doors and cash bar open at 11:30 a.m., with lunch served at noon. Tickets are $30 per person. Group reservations are available and encouraged.
