Union Pines earned a split Thursday in a varsity hoops double header against the Westover Wolverines at Bob Ward Gymnasium on senior night in Cameron.
Led by another dynamic performance from their captain duo of Crystal Hicks and Tyler Ross, the Lady Vikings topped Westover 61-46.
Hicks, a senior point forward and third-year captain, notched a triple-double in her final regular season home game, finishing with 11 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists.
Ross, a 5-foot-10 forward, tallied game-highs with 21 points and 20 rebounds. The junior captain also registered five assists, three steals and three blocks.
With the victory, the Lady Vikes improved to 17-6 on the season and wrapped up their 3-A Cape Fear Valley Conference (CFVC) campaign with a second-place finish at 10-2.
Between the girls' and boys' game, a ceremony was held at half court to honor Union Pines senior basketball players including Lady Vikings Hicks, Alex Parris, Chantelle Carr and Amanda McCoy; along with Vike boys Lashun Brower, Lewis Chalmers, Parris Manning and Charles Steadwell.
Afterwards, the Union Pines boys took the court and gave a good effort against CFVC first-place Westover (16-6, 11-1 CFVC). Although eventually the visiting Wolverines rebounding edge on both ends of the floor was too much for the Vikes to handle, as they dropped the tilt by a score of 60-53.
Junior forward Braxton Ross led the Viking with 17 points on the night. Brower also hit double figures for Union pines with 13.
With the loss Union Pines moved to 13-11 overall and wrapped up its record at 6-6 in the CFVC standings, for a third-place finish in the league.
