Flyers Fall to Davidson CCC in Hoops

The Sandhills Flyers roared out to a 15-point first half lead against Davidson County Community College in Lexington Wednesday evening, but could not hold it.

The No. 4 ranked in NJCAA Division III Storm rallied to defeat the Flyers 84-77, denying coach Mike Apple’s squad a share of first place in Region X. The Flyers take a 19-6 overall and 3-3 record in the region into Saturday’s 3 p.m. contest at Wytheville. The Storm Improved to 23-2 and 6-1.

Led by the scoring of Daquain Towns and Markell Lotharp, who each finished with 20 points, the Flyers took their biggest lead at 31-16. The Storm closed the gap to 44-35 at the intermission and caught up at 69-69 all.

The Flyers trailed by as many as eight down the stretch. They had a chance to reduce the margin to four in the closing minutes before the clock ran out.

Neither team shot the ball well with the Flyers finishing 29-for-80 from the field (36.3 percent), while the Storm went 26-for-68 (38.2 percent). The difference in the game was at the foul line where the home team was 26-for-37 to 11-for-21 for the Flyers.

Maurice Nash and Tevin Richardson led the Storm with 21 and 19 points, respectively. Torian Showers had a double-double that included 15 points and 10 rebounds. Lotharp was four-for-seven from beyond the arc for the Flyers.
