Viking Wrestlers Roll to Title

Union Pines had six wrestlers grab championships on the way to winning the team title Saturday in the Cape Fear Valley Conference individual championships.
Wrestling at Union Pines, the Vikings took the overall team title with 241.5 points, outdistancing runner-up Gray’s Creek that finished with 174 points.
Viking Michael Brennan kept his undefeated season going at 182 pounds, claiming the league championship with a pin over Raymond Garrison of Douglas Byrd 2:59.
Joining Brennan on the winner’s stand for the Vikings were Philip Mondi at 120 pounds, Jaiden Lindsey at 126, Ryan Hull at 132, Paul Ambrose at 138 and Josh Huskey took first at 220.
Mondi pinned Ryan Silliman of Southern Lee in 5:55, while Lindsey won a 13-5 major decision over Jeffery Johnson of Gray’s Creek. Hull won by pin over Colton Phillips of Gray’s Creek in a time of 5:43. Ambrose took 5:43 to win by pin over Tyler Gonzalez of Overhills to claim his title. Huskey pinned Dean Brown of Westover in 2:49 to earn his championship.
Three Vikings reached the championship bout but came up short in earning second-place finishes. Mike Fedowitz was second at 113, Ian Burch at 160 and Andreas Berryman at 285.
Anthony Holt of Southern Lee claimed a 6-3 decision over Fedowitz in the final, while Burch dropped his championship clash to Southern Lee’s Michael Rieves by pin.
Berryman was pinned by Elijah Buxton of Gray’s Creek in their finals clash.
The Vikings had two wrestlers win consolation finals, earning points for the Vikes with their third-place finishes. Earning thirds were Billy Hornbaker at 106 and Zach Yate at 152.
Other team point totals were Southern Lee 132, Douglas Byrd 119, Western Harnett 98.5, Westover 95 and Overhills 81.
