Sills Presents Lecture This Month

Learn about the early church and church architecture in Moore County from historian and educator Milton J. Sills.
His presentation, sponsored by the Moore County Historical Association, is Sunday, Feb. 26, at 2 p.m., at First Baptist Church, 200 E. New York Ave., in Southern Pines. Admission is free. Visitors are requested to use the May Street entrance.
Sills is a retired Moore County Schools principal, a longtime volunteer and member of the Moore County Historical Association Board. He is a member of the Southern Pines Historic District Commission.
A lecturer on North Carolina and Civil War history, Sills is a qualified preaching elder in the Presbytery of Coastal Carolina, a member of Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church, the Sons of the Revolution in North Carolina, and the St. Andrews Society. A charter member of the Kiwanis of the Pines, Sills has also served on the boards of the Arts Council of Moore County, the Sandhills Horticulture Society and the Pauley Lecture Series.
A native of Sampson County, Sills has a bachelor's degree from Barton College, a master's degree from East Carolina University, a certificate of graduate study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the principal's executive program from the Institute of Government. He served in various capacities while working in Moore County Schools, including classroom teaching, principal of Aberdeen Elementary School, and as an administrator at the central office in Carthage until his retirement from the school system in 1993.
Sills is married to Elaine M. Sills, an active volunteer who is a retired music educator from the Moore County Schools. Their son, Morgan, lives in New York City and works in the entertainment industry.
