Continuing a series of shows designed to warm up the winter doldrums, a different kind of bluegrass comes to Aberdeen this week.
Modern string music brought to Moore County by way of Alaska-born Bearfoot will be heard in the listening room of Poplar Knight Spot in downtown Aberdeen, Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 6:45 p.m.
General admission seats are $15 at the door and may also be purchased online through the website, www.theroosters wife.org.
Call it "new-timey," "post-bluegrass," or "string band music for the 21st century," whatever the name, there's a revolution under way where string band traditions are meeting youthful creativity.
Look right to its center, and that's where you'll find Bearfoot. The quintet, originally formed in Alaska, have become festival favorites with four strong releases, including their 2009 Compass Records debut, "Doors and Windows," which instantly hit the top of Billboard magazine's bluegrass album chart.
Now, in the next phase of their career, this Nashville-based five-some has taken its place among the best and brightest of a new generation of musicians reshaping American roots music.
Their new release, "American Story," brings a solidly identifiable sound with the addition of lead vocalist and songwriter Nora Jane Struthers and new members guitarist Todd Grebe and P.J. George taking bass duty.
Struthers' vocals and clear-eyed songwriting sensibilities give the band's new sound a neo-traditional edge, recalling artists like Gillian Welch and Tim O'Brien.
Coupled with the instrumental prowess and vocal harmonies of longtime members Angela Oudean on fiddle and Jason Norris playing mandolin, the new Bearfoot is reminiscent of Nickel Creek one moment and early Dixie Chicks the next, groups with whom they share the title of former Telluride Bluegrass Band Champions.
The Rooster's Wife is a community arts organization committed to bringing the best in live music to the Sandhills. Home base is the gallery room of Poplar Knight Spot, 114 Knight St. in downtown Aberdeen.
The doors open at 6 p.m. for this week's show. For more information, visit www.theroosterswife.org or call (910) 585-1614.
