Mustang Grapplers Pick Up Two Wins

As the Yadkin Valley Conference wrestling tournament nears, the North Moore wrestling team continues to prepare for the upcoming event scheduled Saturday at East Montgomery High School.

This year’s conference tournament format will be an individual tournament to determine the individual champions in the league. The Mustangs geared up for the tournament with a pair of matches hosted by conference foe Albemarle Tuesday. The tri-meet included 2-A North Stanly. With their heavier weight wrestlers dominating, the Mustangs swept both matches, defeating host Albemarle 54-23 and North Stanly 48-24.

The two wins, improves North Moore’s season record to 7-16.

North Moore had seven wrestlers to go 2-0 during the tri-match with Kyle Kidd and Dean Thomas continuing their winning ways. With Kidd picking up two forfeits in the 182-pound class, he runs his record to 21-4 and while Thomas (195 pounds) pinned Albemarle’s Derrick Young and got forfeit victory in the North Stanly match, giving him a season mark of 16-5.

Logan Stancil also went 2-0 with a pin of Albemarle’s Caleb Smith and forfeit against North Stanly. Stancil has an overall record of 13-8 in the 145-pound division.

Other wrestlers to go 2-0 in their matches were Alvaroc Coronel (160), Oliver Castrejon (170), Xisto Hernandez (220) and Joe Davis (285). With his two victories, Hernandez evens his record to 11-11.

Ian Farris picked up a victory in the 138-pound class when he pinned his North Stanly opponent, but lost a tech fall in his Albemarle match. Remington Summers went 1-1 in the 126-pound class while teammate Ethan Morrison also went 1-1 in the 152-pound class. Tristin Mackey dropped both his matches in the 113 class.

After the conference tournament tomorrow, the Midwestern Regionals are scheduled Feb. 10-11 at Monroe High School.
