Cavs Top Lady Vikings in Battle for First

Southern Lee pulled away in the third quarter to register a 49-37 win over the homestanding Union Pines girls Tuesday in a Cape Fear Valley Conference roundball showdown.

The visiting Cavs (17-2, 9-0 CFVC) came into the contest with a perfect 8-0 mark in league play, while the Lady Vikings (14-6) were a half-game behind at 8-1. With the loss the second-place Vikings fell two games behind in the loss column at 8-2 in the league standings, with two game remaining on the conference schedule.

Southern Lee led 18-12 at halftime and pushed its advantage to 29-14 with 2:30 left in the third quarter.

Senior Cavalier point guard Jasmine Butler led her team with a game-high 22 points in the tilt.

Tyler Ross had 13 points and 17 rebounds to go along with six steals and three assists for the Vikes. Crystal Hicks finished with six points, 12 rebounds, six steals and three assists. Tiffany Hicks had eight points, 10 rebounds and three blocks for the Vikes

Union Pines closes the week with a CFVC road game Friday against Western Harnett (2-17, 2-7) in Lillington at 6 p.m.
