Lady Viking Jayvee Team Gets Two Wins

The Union Pines Lady Vikings junior varsity basketball team closed the week Friday with its second 3-A Cape Fear Valley Conference win of the season to improve to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in league action.
Leading the way for Union Pines Friday afternoon over Overhills at Spring Lake were sophomore Onika Williams and freshman Nia Mosely.
Williams tallied 17 points, three steals and two assists from the point guard spout, while Mosley notched a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double as the Vikes defeated the homestanding Jaguars 43-30.
Through halftime of the tilt Union Pines clung to a 16-14 lead. The Vikings managed to outscore the Jags 27-16 in the final half, holding their opponent to eight points in both the third and fourth quarters.
In the third quarter Williams scored eight of her 11 second-half points to help give Union Pines a 31-22 lead as action moved to the final period.
The Vikings opened the week Tuesday on their home court in Cameron with a 47-15 drubbing of the Douglas Byrd Eagles in the Vikes’ league opener.
Behind six points from Mosley, Union Pines jumped out to a 10-3 lead through one quarter of action. From there the Vikes continued to build on their lead in the second quarter as Williams had five points to help her squad take 21-8 advantage at the half.
With the entire Union Pines roster receiving ample playing time in the final half, freshman Jamaria McPhatter scored six points in the third frame as the Vikes’ lead grew to 33-11 through three quarters of action.
Vike sophomore reserve guard Taylor Sobczak scored 10 of her team’s 14 points in the last quarter.
